About this product

Product Information

A nonstop profusion of hilarious calamities, coincidences, and misunderstandings ensue when an accident-prone heiress turns a sheltered scientist's life upside down. Dr. David Huxley (Cary Grant) is a straitlaced paleontologist juggling three important events at once: the arrival of an extremely rare bone needed to complete his brontosaurus skeleton; a meeting to ask for a million dollars for his museum from a wealthy donor; and his impending marriage to the humorless Miss Swallow (Virginia Walker). Into David's life comes Susan (Katharine Hepburn), a free-spirited young woman who seems to bring trouble wherever she goes. Thanks to Susan, David finds himself involved in one ridiculous situation after another, and soon the two are prowling around a country estate looking for the missing dinosaur bone, hunting for a lost pet leopard named Baby, and somehow falling in love. Grant and Hepburn form a sharp-witted and hysterical comic duo, and Howard Hawks directs BRINGING UP BABY with the control of a master, creating a shining example of brilliant screwball comedy.

    The original screwball comedy

For true movie fans this movie is a must to see, it came out in 1938 and through the years has become one of the top 100 films of all time. This DVD also has a second disc with about 3 hours of additional material, including a lengthy tribute to both Cary Grant and Howard Hawks. Plus it has a couple of short subjects that you would have seen back then when you went to the movies.

  • Bringing Up Baby, a classic comedy

Bringing Up Baby is a great family comedy. Unlike modern films with the same old tired jokes, this classic black and white seems fresh and clean. Carey Grant is at his best in this kind of role. Although Katherine Hepburn's character is conniving and lies to get her way, there is nothing objectionable about the content of this film. It is suitable for all ages. The story is simple and silly. David is trying to convince a lawyer with a wealthy client to endow a million dollars to the museum that David works for. Susan, who just happens to be the neice of the client, falls for David and is determined to win his love. Susan never thinks beyond the next minute and her actions create one zany mishap after another as David tries to salvage each situation. The supporting cast of characters ...

  • The very best kind of funny.

The funniest of the "screwball comedies." Had Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn each done this movie and nothing else, their iconic legacies would have been well secured; same for director Howard Hawks. Nothing in the contemporary comedy genre even begins to approach this brilliant comedy. It represents one of those all-things-come-together moments that make you think it must surely have been serendipity...a visitation of Divine energy...the proverbial sum greater than its parts. No matter how many times you watch it, you're guaranteed to laugh. It's astonishingly good; the writing, the acting, the technical aspects. Those that have lived long enough know that there are certain moments in life when you simply have to bow to the absurd. This great film captures one of those moments. ...

  • Screwy

This first time I watched this film, way back when, I was like, "This movie is just TOO much, it's too off-the-rails, and Katherine Hepburn is just too CRAZY." Then I watched it another time, years later, and I was like, "You know, this movie isn't so bad." Then I watched it again and again, and now I'm like, "This movie is a masterpiece." Seriously. It's a feat to keep up with the great Kate, but once you get your legs under you, you're in for a gloriously entertaining ride. Screwball comedies don't get any screwier than this.

  • A Genuine, Screwball Comedy In The 1930s Style

This is a genuine, screwball comedy in the 1930s style. It has a goofy premise and a wacky plot. What makes it a wonderful film are the two, shining stars of old Hollywood. Cary Grant was still in his formative years and Katharine Hepburn was at her good looking best. I have been buying Cary Grant movies lately and discovered how many really good movies he made over the years. He was one of Hitchcock's favorites along with Jimmy Stewart. I enjoy the old movies and have a lot of them.
