Yeah, It’s Funkier
One of the less-enthusiastically received albums from their Tony Bourge era, Impeckable really isn’t bad at all. Since Bandolier, they were gradually working funk into their unique brand of otherwise salt-of-the-earth heavy blues rock, but it became a deep-rooted feature by the time of that album’s follow-up, If I Were Brittania I’d Waive the Rules (get it?), and even more so on this album. This proved to be too much for most fans and critics who perhaps shared Ritchie Blackmore’s persnickety view of “shoeshine music” being mixed in with hard rock. Hind sight being 20/20, however, those funky affectations actually freshened up their approach, which may well have faded in its own limitations. The heavy rock is still very much present, much more so than the rather uneven attempts at ... This stuff is still muscular and relentlessly crunchy, of course with the obligatory acoustic ballad thrown on (“Don’t Go Away”), which is as good as any of their earlier ones. “All At Sea” does dip a bit into 70s soft rock, but with a more sophisticated vibe that makes it a unique chestnut in the set. But these two aside, the album really kicks, albeit with a smoother flow. It’s one of those great, underrated albums that reveals its fine points with repeated spins, which cannot be easily said about the “hair band” material Budgie sank to after Bourge’s departure.
