    Stens Ring Gear

    Great product!! Was able to install this a few days ago and was able to cut my grass with ease yesterday!! No trouble starting or anything!! If you have the plastic ring gear issue, this is a great replacement!! Also, for install instructions, check out a guy on YouTube. His page is Taryl Fixes All. He has a video on how to replace this and thanks to his vid I had no problem!!

    Flywheel gear is ok but starter gear useless

    So after installation of the ring gear and starter gear I started to notice that the starter gear was dragging and making weird noises. After removal of the Stens starter gear this is the conclusion I have come to. If you notice in the pics below on the right hand side is a OEM Briggs gear, notice the little cut out it has where the spring sits to keep the spring in place and also keep the spring from wearing the top of the gear. Pictured on the left is the Stens starter gear notice how it is flat on top with no cut out for the spring to sit. I have installed 3 new springs on this gear and it kept chewing them up, you can even see the excessive wear on top of the gear. My recommendation is, this is not a bad kit for the price but save your self some time and order the OEM Briggs starter ...

    excellent ring gear kit

    Kit is complete and relatively easy to install for someone used to working on small engines. Removing the flywheel requires the use of a puller and is the only item a "backyard" mechanic might not have, but can be borrowed or rented at an auto supply store. The ring gear in the kit is aluminum vice the stock plastic, and should be the last one needed to be installed on the motor. Installing the starter gear can be a bit troublesome due to the difficulty of removing and reinstalling the retaining ring that holds the starter gear on the starter. If the correct starter gear is already installed and in good condition, replacing it may not be necessary. All parts fit correctly, good instructions included, starter works smoothly again.

    Aluminum ring gear perfectly replaces plastic gear

    Ring gear perfectly replaces the old plastic gear, holes lined up, new screws with locking nuts replaced the original rivets. New gear is aluminum and needs to used with the provided gear for the starter motor. Removed the original steel rivets by grinding off top the rivets on the upper side of the flywheel and using a 3/16 punch, drove the rivets out. Took about 10 minutes. Kit also included two roll pins and a small "C" clip for the starter. Do not lose the clip, it is small and easy to misplace. Happy times, ready to mow once more.

    Quick but not too easy.

    Received order for B&S ring gear in very rapid order, California to Upper Michigan in a day and a half. Older fiber ring gear lasted well over 20 years through countless starts on a modified mower relegated to tractor duty. This gear, being metal should last well after I'm gone. Note: It comes with all fittings to change Bendix drive gear as well. Removing fly-wheel on a 20+ year old mower is never easy. A small drill press is a distinct advantage when drilling out rivets. A very good re-build kit.
