Windows 10S only allows apps from Microsoft Store but can be upgraded for free.
The computer is just fine but I wish I'd noticed and understood what the S in "Windows 10S" means. It means many things but the most important is that it will only run apps from the official Microsoft App Store. However, I've learned that you can upgrade out of S-mode through the Microsoft Store itself. This used to cost $50 but can now be done for free. It can be a bit of a chore to find the proper link in the store but it is there.
