This particular HP 12A toner cartridge was an "open box", but sealed in the bubble wrap. Brand new (relatively speaking, since the box is dated 2011! The cartridge/toner is 12 years old!). And works perfectly. My previous 12A toner cartridge (used; bought it just to make sure my free 1022N printer (someone was throwing it away!) was functioning properly) was purchased in 2018 and lasted 5 years before the prints started fading. So, just know that a 12 year old sealed/unopened 12A toner cartridge is as good as any. Don't pay HP's inflated new cartridge prices ($98), nor any other company's $50 or higher "discount deal" prices, like I almost did.
