Following the success of REPULSION, THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS was Roman Polanski's first big-budget film, a noticeably more upscale and lavish production than any of his previous offerings. Professor Ambronsius (Jack MacGowran), an eccentric old academic specializing in the study of bats, and his bumbling but well-meaning assistant, Alfred (brilliantly played by Polanski himself), travel to a small village in snowbound Transylvania (actually, filming took place in the Italian Alps) that has been plagued by a clan of local vampires. After innkeeper Shagal's comely daughter, Sarah (Sharon Tate), is abducted by Count Von Krolock (Ferdy Mayne), Ambronsius and Alfred venture out to the count's castle to rid the area of its bloodsucking parasites once and for all--a dangerous undertaking indeed, especially since it soon becomes apparent that traditional weapons against the undead are not quite as effective as folklore would have one believe and that attractive young maidens are not the only ones in danger of becoming victims of a vampire' uninvited advances. One of Polanski's most impressive achievements in FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS is presenting viewers with a perfectly executed horror-parody while at the same time maintaining a consistent underlying sense of dread.

I decided to buy this film for a few reasons. One, I am very interested in the old time campy, sexual comedies that were the fad in the mid to late sixties. Another reason was that I wanted to get a glimpse of Sharon Tate acting. I have recently begun to have a growing interest in her life and also the makeup of these cults, and how people can get sucked into them. Perhaps a large amount of LSD could be one reason. Roman Polanski directed this, and as I'm sure you may know, he was married to Sharon Tate. He is a very respected director of classics such as Rosemary's Baby.. whom he wanted to cast Tate in but feared retribution because of their romantic involvement... and Chinatown. In more recent years he directed Adrien Brody in The Pianist which won awards at Cannes, and I believe ... I decided to buy this film for a few reasons. Of course Polanski had many an argument with the studio over this film... First and foremost, the original title was "Dance of the Vampires" but the studio wanted to make it sound more catchy and therefore the title is as it is seen here.. of course, this is only the American title. In the more civilized countries where art remains a little above the almighty dollar, it got to keep it's original title. A good buy, and one I do not regret.

I still have my VHS with the original 20 mins put back in that were editied out at the movies. I have re-watched this film many times. A wonderful mixture of horror and humor co-written and directed by Roman Polanski. Polanski plays Alfred, the assistant to Professor Abronsius played by Jack MacGowan. They travel to Transylvania to hunt out and destroy Slovonic vampires. The fun begins when they stop at an inn and encounter the beautiful Sharon Tate who is later kidnapped and taken to the castle of the vampires. Alfred and the professor are in hot pursuit to rescue Sarah (Tate). Lots of bumbling and campy fun. The ice and snow throughout the whole picture will actually make you feel cold, even in the summer! Shannon Tate Fan
My husband is a Shannon Tate fan and he saw this years ago and whated to see it again so we brought it for a great price. I have never heard of it until now but have heard of her. Never knew she was a model or was in the movie. I just knew that she was killed and murderd my the mad man that was in the news when I was a kid in school.
