About this product

Product Information

ROCKY BALBOA, the sixth installment of the long-running film franchise, should amount to nothing more than a lame punch line to a TONIGHT SHOW monologue joke. However, just as his longtime corner man Paulie describes the Italian Stallion himself, this movie is all heart. Thirty years after Sylvester Stallone first introduced the underdog backroom brawler from Philadelphia in the Oscar-winning ROCKY, Rocky Balboa returns for one last dance. Speculation as to whether Balboa, in his prime, would have been able to defeat lackluster champ Mason "The Line" Dixon spurs Dixon's management to set up an exhibition fight between the two. That Balboa is in his 50s in the film and wouldn't be sanctioned to fight anyone, let alone a man 30 years his junior and in the prime of life, must be left up to the viewer's ability to suspend disbelief. To its credit, however, the movie addresses at every turn the insanity of a man approaching 60 getting back into a boxing ring, and Balboa's impassioned explanation of his motivations is just believable enough to give all other improbabilities a free pass.Though it may sound like faint praise, this is the best ROCKY movie since the original. It's very much a love letter to Philadelphia, and Stallone, who wrote and directed the movie, shoots everything with an unflinching eye that humanizes the mean streets of the City of Brotherly Love and evokes the gritty dignity of the original film. And while Burt Young's cantankerous Paulie and Tony Burton's Duke both return, Talia Shire, sadly, does not reprise her role as the beloved Adrian. It's revealed early in the film that Adrian has died of cancer, and it's the pain of that tragedy that ultimately fuels Rocky. Boxing as a metaphor for life is certainly nothing new, but Stallone makes a legitimate contribution to the tradition with ROCKY BALBOA. Life hits harder than any man can, and one's ability to keep getting up until the final bell rings is the true measure of self. Corny? Perhaps. But when Bill Conti's legendary score kicks in and Rocky starts pounding the heavy bag, the metaphor feels truly profound.

  • Good movie, picture quality varies because of equipment

I'm not sure how to review this. I guess I'll split it into three areas. The movie: This is a character-driven drama first, and boxing is secondary. If you loved the action in Rocky III and IV, this may disappoint you. There is no "villain" in this movie, and it's mostly about how Rocky deals with certain aspects of his life and relationships with the people around him. The first 3/4 of the movie is shot on film. This is the part that is shot in Philly, and is the character-driven portion of the film. It looks quite good, but not jaw-dropping. The last fight sequence in Las Vegas is shot entirely with HD cameras, and it looks brilliant. This is arguably the best-looking content on the Blu-Ray format right now. Very, very impressive. It is also worth noting that this movie is presented ...

  • On Par With Most Rocky Movies

The good news is that after all these years, Rocky Balboa wasn't a terrible movie, that bad news is that it hasn't improved too much. If you were a fan of the old, underdog boxing films that were rampant throughout the 80's, then don't miss this final installment in the life of everyone's favorite underdog. If you found the earlier films too melodramatic for your tastes, your opinion probably won't have changed much in the last 20 years. If you are new to the series, here's what you need to know. Rocky Balboa is a long time retired boxer. He had some incredible fights as a younger boxer, competing with opponents who were much stronger favorites than he. He's been retired for years, but now as a much older man, he feels the need to come back for one last big fight. Most of the movie ...

  • A great movie that both men and women will enjoy!

This was a great final chapter to end the Rocky franchise. After Rocky 5 I think everyone including myself was not looking forward to anything with Rocky in the title. So when I heard that Rocky Balboa was green lit I thought here comes the train wreck of Sylvester Stallone's career that would put him on the sideline with Steven Seagal, Wesley Snipes, and Jean Claude on the straight to DVD shelf's at the local video store. But overall he proved even his harshest critics wrong, this movie was fantastic and not too far from the classic that the original Rocky was but pretty damn close to what everyone wanted with the last movie of the franchise. The production values, acting, directing, and cinematography are above and beyond anything that Stallone has done previously. Where other sports ...

  • A really decent film

Rocky Balboa Although it was nothing special and was really just a rehash and mashed up version of previous Rocky films it still had that little something special. I'll have to be honest though, I thought the concept was stupid and completely unbelievable until I saw Randy Couture knock Tim Sylvia into next week at UFC 68. This movie had a decent story and some pretty good performances. The boxing action wasn't up to par for me but this movie is more about the story and less about the boxing. Although it's not my favorite Rocky film it still ranks up there with all the others. Final Verdict: 4/5 Worth buying? I'm not a huge Rocky fan so I won't be buying it, but anybody who loves boxing or the Rocky series will feel the need to invest in a copy.

  • good movie, visuals where ok, but sound was better

i bought this movie because i also had it on origianl dvd, and wanted to compare dvd vs blue ray. i have a high end surround sound system and run my blue ray hdmi, i can say the visuals of the movie where better then its dvd counterpart. most noticably with the red flowers on the grave, but didnt really notice a major differance till the end fight and the bright lights of the arena where just beautifull. but the biggest differance i noticed with blue ray was the amazing sound. the bass hits so crisp and so clear. as dvd can tend to be a bit hit or miss at times. the movie is a good move. its no rocky 4, but its a good movie. if your a fan of rocky, you will love it.
