About this product

Product Information

Step up your style and creativity with a Nikon Nikkor 55mm Ai-S lens. This model, which replaced an earlier F mount version in 1977, was the company's very first ultra-speed SLR lens. With a maximum aperture of f/1.2 and a minimum of f/16, this camera accessory is great for low-light photography. It also works well for shots that require a shallow depth of field. If you like taking portraits, then this Nikon product is a good investment. You can get either a soft contrast by keeping the mechanism wide open or a sharp image by stopping down. Although many users prefer settings within the range of f/2.8 and f/8, this prime lens allows you to experiment with more extreme options. You can manipulate and control any spherical aberration or coma that occurs at f/1.2 by simply making a few adjustments. The 55mm model is 2.4 inches in overall length with the extension from the flange measuring 1.95 inches. The lens' diameter is 2.83 inches. These large-diameter SLR lenses from the 1970s are still popular among photography enthusiasts. Since the Nikkor Ai-S variety is compatible with most 35 mm and digital Nikon cameras, it is recognized as a versatile piece of equipment. It works with virtually all manual-focus cameras produced by Nikon, including the original model of the F series that debuted in 1959. Likewise, the modern FM-10 is built to accommodate this unit-focus lens. If barrel distortion becomes a problem, then you can correct it through the use of Photoshop's lens-distortion filter. A hood isn't necessary to prevent ghosts or flare; the f/1.2 automatic indexing lens is well known for its ability to manage light. The model also gives you good bokeh at settings below f/2. Even at f/1.2, the focus can be precise as long as your subject is not moving. By using Live View at its highest magnification, your camera can capture a fine image. The rubberized ring for focusing has a 230-degree rotation for 0.5 meters. Its maximum reproduction ratio is 1:7.3. For the astronomy enthusiast longing to capture the magical night sky, use the 55mm lens's hard infinity focus stop. Once you've turned the ring to this stop, you can leave it there all night and snap picture-perfect images of the stars and planets. The mechanism also has an infrared index on the depth-of-field scale. It is a red dot that is located near the f/4 setting. If you are operating an autofocus Nikon with multiple AF sensors, then the dot in your viewfinder will read from any sensor that you use. The Nikon 55mm is a manual-focus lens that is solid and easy to maneuver. The 14.4-ounce lens is made of metal and glass for durability. The serial number and identity that appear on the front of the device are engraved into the metal and then filled in with paint. The aperture ring lies behind the main barrel and is not readily visible. Because of its scalloped grip, the device has easy accessibility.

I had a question regarding the lightmeter, and they responded promptly- the next business day. Then I purchased the camera and they shipped it out the same day. The product arrived sooner than expected and was well-packaged. The physical condition of the camera is as pictured. I have yet to test the light meter functionality because I need to get a battery; however, everything appears to be in good shape. I 've bought from KEH Outlet before, and always had good service.

    "A must have lens"

I purchased this lens for low light and fast sports action. I have take only a few low light pictures but have been very pleased. I am looking forward to use it this week at my grandsons football game.

  • Perfect for weddings, portraits, street photography, and people pictures.

I needed a lens that I can use for low light photography and this one, with its maximum aperture of f/1.2, fits the bill. Very sharp near the center wide open, but quite soft around the edges and corners. Stop down to f/4.o and everything just pops out! Images are contrasty and colors are well saturated. Who needs AF anyway, when you can have one great imaging tool with this lens. There are lots of lenses out there similar to this one, but this is, for me, the best of the lot. The Ziess 50mm f/1.4 ZF.2 is sharper, but it's more that twice the price!!!

  • Extremely sharp lens with very shallow depth of field and a smooth focus

Awesome lens! This is a transitional model which is very close to the 58mm 1.2 noct from Nikon without the ED glass and the 3 mm more focal length...not to mention the extra few thousand dollars! I find it to be very sharp, easy to focus and perfect for selective focus photography.

  • Very nice lens, but not for everyone

If you expect the same quality as the modern lenses then you should forget it. At 1.2f there are some halos around bright spots in the pictures, Hard to get sharp images because of the shallow depth of field. Even with sony A7 focus peeking its not easy to get a correct focus every time, I would say I manage to get 5/10 pictures sharp, so thats really a 50/50 chance even with focus peeking. Contrast and overall sharpness compared to modern lenses are weak. It is enough for someone as me because photography for me is a hobby, free time activity. But if you want this lens for a professional work I would say better stick with modern alternatives that has AF and better control over the sharpness and overall image quality. The only advatages of this lens is its weight which is only 410g ...

  • The fastest lens for a Nikon...

The 55 ƒ 1.2 is the fastest lens Nikon ever produced in quantity. This particular lens is AI'd, not AI, as stated in the product description (and I informed the seller of that fact...) I use it on an F3HP and have had a good result with the only shot developed so far...
