There is a fair amount of assembly but the directions are clear and it doesn't take to long to put them together. I didn't even realize they came with straps so I was pleased to find them in the box and they are pretty decent as well. Definitely look over the directions when assembling and mounting to your vehicle. The knobs have another nut that gets tightened against them to lock them in place.
