Awesome PlayStation 1 launch title for race fans!

This PlayStation 1 port based on the original 1990s arcade game of the same name has very unique things about it. From the start, you can choose a car, a track, transmission, and an audio setting, all on one screen, and you're ready to roll! The vehicles and tracks are amazing, the soundtrack and driving physics are good, and this is overall a great classic video game for the PS1. I'd recommend it!

    Not a good game

The game is pretty short in duration by today's standards. When it first came out, it was my favorite racer at the time, but now it is incredibly outdated. The best part of the game is the loading screen where you can play the old Namco shooter while you wait.

  • This racing game is only good for vintage value, has not aged well at all.

Only buy for vintage value, the truth of the matter is this racing game has not aged well at all. By the end of the game you will only have 5 cars and 2.5 tracks, the game has some of the more primitive Polygon graphics you've ever seen, the soundtrack gets annoying real fast, the cars don't handle like real cars at all, and the worst part? There are literally dozens of other racing games for the PS1 which far outshine this game. So what are the pros? This is one of the first racing- no, this one of the first games for the PS1, the cars may not handle like real cars but the races are still playable and can still be fun, while primitive the graphics are charming in their own little way, and you can play it on your PS3. My advice: if you want to have an iconic piece of videogame history ...

  • Disappointing

Bought this game for my seven year old after reading the two excellent reviews written here! So this review area needs balance. Using him as a judge I'd say I'm generous to give it a below average rating. He said to give it a poor rating but I'll be a little nicer here. After playing the game for an hour or so, he has put it down and probably won't play it again. I watched him play for awhile - The graphics are subpar compared to something like Need for Speed or GT2 (or crash bandicoot) or almost anything I've seen for the regular Playstation 1. The plus side is he said he liked the music. The voice overs were annoying (his words). The game dynamics aren't realistic. Basically, it's somewhat boring.

  • If you enjoy racing games, this one needs to be in your collection.

Classic title that seriously made an impact to the racing genre by implementing a drift mechanic. Few racing games I play today compare to the fun factor of this title. I think this is the third copy of this game I have purchase since my original PS. (I now play this on my phat PS3). If anything negative could be said about the game, it would have to be that the game is short and a bit one dimensional. An expansion or two would have helped its longevity as well. I don't think you will find many other PS1 racing games that have left a legacy quite like Ridge Racer. Last thing, I don't really care for techno music, but the soundtrack fits perfectly in my opinion. I even put it in my iTunes :-D
