About this product

Product Information

By the winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Economics, an essential and paradigm-altering framework for understanding economic development--for both rich and poor--in the twenty-first century. Freedom, Sen argues, is both the end and most efficient means of sustaining economic life and the key to securing the general welfare of the world's entire population. Releasing the idea of individual freedom from association with any particular historical, intellectual, political, or religious tradition, Sen clearly demonstrates its current applicability and possibilities. In the new global economy, where, despite unprecedented increases in overall opulence, the contemporary world denies elementary freedoms to vast numbers--perhaps even the majority of people--he concludes, it is still possible to practically and optimistically restain a sense of social accountability. Development as Freedom is essential reading.

"Fascinating. . . . The overall argument [is] eloquent and probing." --The New York Times "A new approach . . . refreshing, thoughtful, and human. Sen's optimism and no-nonsense proposals leave one feeling that perhaps there is a solution." --Business Week "The . . . perspective that Mr. Sen describes and advocates has great attractions.  Chief among them is that, by cutting through the sterile debate for or against the market, it makes it easier to ask sharper questions about public policy." --The Economist, "Fascinating. . . . Book was indeed brand new and arrived in good time from San Juan Puerto Rico in a nicely padded envelope. Seller was kind enough to fulfill my two packaging requests: (1) place the book in between cardboard to avoid having USPS bending it (and the seller took the extra step of covering the book with bubble wrap -- many thanks for doing so!), and for the same purpose, (2) writing "Do not bend, no dolbar" on the front and back of the shipping envelope. I would buy from this wonderful seller again.

  • Thought provoking. A new look at development.

This book is definitely a refreshing look at development, not just solely about economics but includes important aspects like health, democracy, the social contract, etc. One of the few things I've read that includes all of these things into one paradigm of thought. Though full of information, theory, evidence, etc. This book can be very repetitive at some points, which can be a little annoying but once you get the main jist of his argument you can skim over the repetitious stuff. Definitely a worthwhile read for anyone interested in international development.

  • Great book by Nobel prize Amartya Sen.

Excellent book, this author is an amazing example of economic philosophy in the world. The book gives a broader perspective of third world nations.

  • Review!

Great book! I bought this book for one of my classes and I really thought it was a good, interesting book!

  • Thank you!

I bought this for a class, and I like Sen's ideas. One annoying thing about his writing style is that he always says he will discuss a concept later in the book.

  • Poor Seller

Sold the book without having to send. After 45 days justifying the delay just told: "Probably happens something on the sending process and we don't have another book to send to you." At least, he was honest and sent my money back.
