Stout is a compelling writer, which is proven when you read it again. Then, when you read it even again, you think to yourself, where is another Nero Wolfe Story? And in a few years, when you find yourself (inadvertently) reading it again, you realize, halfway through, that you have read this story before, and you are enjoying it as though you are reading it the first time. I have also found that careful analysis, which often destroys a story, only enhances Stout's wonderful series about Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin. Fer De Lance is the first story, and instead of coming to the conclusion that Stout "got better" as he writes, one decides that this series was well-conceived at the very beginning, in 1934. So dive in.
