  • Easy install

I finally bought the Byrd Shelix head for my DeWalt 735 planer. Install was easier than I thought. You just have to have a snap ring pliers, one that pulls apart and one that squeezes together, a 6mm socket, and I think that it was a 13/16" socket to remove the nut from the shaft. Also, there is one size of allen wrench that is different from the one on the machine that will be needed. I followed along to a YouTube video. The one that I purchased did not need to have the cutters removed for install and is noticeably a smaller head. The cut is nice and smooth with an incredible sound reduction. The only downfall of installing this head on the DeWalt 735 is that it makes the machine work much harder. I have blown my 20 amp breaker a few times already.. I try and take light passes but it is obviously making the machine do much more work. Overall, for a hobby shop this is a great addition to the DeWalt without the investment into a larger machine. I think that the quieter sound alone is reason enough to switch from straight knives.

  • A worthwhile investment

This is the 2nd Shelix cutterhead I have bought. The first went in a Jet 6" jointer/planer I bought and restored. They are expensive, but in the long run, you will spend less time changing and buying or re-sharpening blades, not to mention trying to get them adjusted just right. If you get a chip in one or 2 of the carbide cutters, just loosen them, turn them 90 degrees, tighten, and keep working---minimal downtime. I haven't run anything through this one yet, but the Jet jointer does leave small (.001"-.002") ridges, but are easily sanded out with normal sanding/finishing.....sure beats the deeper divots that full width blades leave.

  • You need this

This is a great design and a must have for the Dewalt planer. I was tired of the original blades getting nicked all the time and leaving lines behind on the wood. All the wood I use is clean hard wood and I still get nicks in the blades. The other thing that bothered me was the noise level from the original blades. Once I put this Shelix cutter head on the noise level is half. I can even run wood through without using hearing protection. This cutter head is worth every penny.

  • A Wonderful Tool!

Much quieter than the original straight planer blades, very smooth cuts, and NO tear out on tropical hardwoods. Hardly any sanding even needed except maybe to roughen the surface for gluing. If you can afford it, DON'T hesitate to convert your planer. Instructions, with pictures, were accurate and made installation easy. I had one question which was answered promptly with a phone call.

  • DW735 do-over

As delivered, the unit was in perfect condition, and as advertised. Installation was simple, if time consuming, assuming you have/are watching, an installation video on YouTube. The noise level of the DW735 is LOUD when new and gets LOUDER, as the original knives dull, (and it don't take long for that to happen!). The Byrd cutter head cut the Db's by half from the start. I will need to replace/rotate, one of the carbide inserts as it is leaving an unfinished cut. Not a huge deal but is an issue to be dealt with. Overall, a very good upgrade to an otherwise terrific machine.

  • Fantastic.

A huge improvement on the standard Dewalt blades. Very quiet and cuts smoothly. Has a little trouble on our Australian Hardwoods with tearout but no troubles if lighter cuts are taken. Packaging was excellent and it was easy to install after watching the process on youtube. Well done Shelix!

  • An excellent addition to my planer. Much quieter and much smoother

The Shelix cutterhead seems to be very well made. I found instructions and videos on the internet and it wasn't too hard to install. I really like it. Glad I bought it.

  • The original Byrd Shelix heads are the best

The carbide knives are on a 10 degree angle, that is the key to chip free hardwood planing. Very nice product every wood worker should have one on their planer, jointer, etc

  • Nice smooth surface

Do I need a belt sander now? I'm saying no for now. My surface is about as smooth as I need it. I am now working with my second planer and I see a huge difference between them, same mfg. I'll give more info after Xmas when I have more time. Merry Xmas everyone!!

  • Best thing since sliced cheese

I have been working with quite a bit of hickory that has destroyed may factory blade. After installing the shelix head I was amazed at how quite, smooth it cut. Well worth the investment!
