This projector in my opinion is competitive with any $2000 or even some $2500 units. Its major inconvenience (its a DLP unit) is the setup requirement of needing it very high on the ceiling, preferably 8 ft with even some backward tilt on it but I believe the picture for motion pictures can be only surpassed with the Infocus IN82, IN83 or perhaps the JVC projectors as the professional reviewer at projectorcentral.com or projectorreview.com said (I forgot which one). Sharp came out with a good one recently with more contrast but unless you have a totally darkened room (not just dark but all the furnishing dark and light absorbent)... then its not going to do much good beyond the 10,000 contrast ratio that this one specifies. The OPTOMA HD8000 ANSI contrast (that is another number) is ... This projector in my opinion is competitive with any $2000 or even some $2500 units. The OPTOMA HD8000 ANSI contrast (that is another number) is 515 which is better than any LCD or LCOS projector and is only surpassed by BenQ 20000 and Optoma 8200 and those cost much more. That number produces the sense of picture depth or feeling of "3D'. However, as the reviewers say, if you want to see the contrast in a dark suit while there is a lot of white light in the background scene then you should get a JVC LCOS or Sony SXRD projector but this is just one shortcoming of all LCD and DLP projectors and I don't think it justifies having to pay $2000 more. I lucked out on mine for a total cost of $1440 incl. shipping. The color, contrast and shadow gradiation (this has to do with gray scale performance) are excellent and liquid looking with HD source material from Blu-ray or any other HD source, preferably through the HDMI input but still very good on the DVI output from the 1080(I) source on my cable box. This is what I reviewed with my Accuscreen 1.0 gain 120 inch screen ($120) which can be filled out at night from 16 feet distance and 7.7 ft. high from floor, close to the ceiling and with the lamp in low brightness or "eco" mode for longer lamp life. It is possible to get a much brighter screen with an Optoma approved 1.8 gain Panoview Graywolf II screen which I will try out sometime next month or so. It is important to experiment with the many picture settings to get the finest results, including the Iris control. I am very satisfied with this projector.

Optoma HD8000 Home Theater Projector
The picture produced by this unit is AWESOME. Perfect for what we wanted (home theater in bonus room). Only comment on the negative side is...the fan is a bit loud. You do not notice it when action is on the TV, only during the pauses. As our projector is mounted overhead (right above seating) you do hear it when the sound on TV is low or soft. Otherwise...I highly recommend this unit! We are well pleased with the unit and more so considering the cost of comparable projectors.The picture produced by this unit is AWESOME.
