Product Information

Burt Lancaster reteams with John Frankenheimer, starring as the title character, Robert E. Stroud. Sentenced to a dozen years in prison for killing a man in 1909, he loses any chance for parole by stabbing another prisoner. Incarcerated in Leavenworth, he adds to his problems by killing a prison guard for refusing to let his mother (Thelma Ritter) visit him and is sentenced to death. His mother begs Mrs. Woodrow Wilson to intercede, and the president commutes Stroud's sentence to life in isolation, under the gaze of the harsh warden Harvey Shoemaker (Karl Malden). One day in the isolation yard he comes across a wounded sparrow, nurses it back to health, and eventually teaches it to perform tricks. With the departure of Shoemaker, Stroud is allowed to have more birds in his cell and begins a study of them. As the years pass, he becomes an expert on caged birds, finally writing a book on the diseases to which they are susceptible. After he wins a prize in a magazine competition, he receives a visit from Stella Johnson (Betty Field), who suggests they start a business manufacturing avian medicine. Backed by an outstanding cast, Lancaster gives one of his finest performances in this moving account of a vicious killer's spiritual rebirth.

PLOT: Robert Stoud a 2 TIME KILLER IN PRISON FOR LIFE~ FINDS a baby bird in the prison courtyard and the hardened con useds his brain and time to raising a sparrow~ ends up a authority on Birds~ outstanding performaces all around~ steller CAST~ BURT LANCASTER GIVES one is his finest performances as Stoud the killer of 2 people~ he spends over 50 years in several Max Prisons but is "famous" for being the Birdman of Alcatraz~ the real "story" here starts in Levinworth~ Fed Prison where a sparrow raised by Stroud soon has all the cons with Canarys and soon a series of dying birds of his own and the other 'cons' HAS Stroud using his genius IQ busy with aviary research~ Fantastic support CAST~ Thema Ritter as his controlling but loving Mother~ Karl Malden~ as ... Excellent film, not 100% historically accurate
Excellent movie that will have you rooting for Robert Stroud. But, like most films, it is based on a true story, not 100% historically accurate. The real Robert Stroud was manipulative, psychologically disturbed, violent, and homosexual --- unlike Burt Lancaster's Stroud, who displays none of these traits. The fact remains that Stroud's accomplishments were remarkable. Birdman of Alcatraz, like The Greatest Showman, turns its main character into a hero, when in reality both Stroud and P.T. Barnum were not always admirable. But the fictional stories are enjoyable, and will spark your interest in learning more about the actual people & events. Birdman of Alcatraz
I saw this movie as a very young woman - I was fascinated by someone being in "prison". In our small community, no one ever went to prison and so this made a huge impact on me BUT the true story was the love a man found for the birds while he was incarcerated. I love birds - spend lots of money feeding them and buying feeders, etc. I am so anxious to have the opportunity to watch this movie again to see how I feel about it as a "grown woman".I saw this movie as a very young woman - I was fascinated by someone being in "prison".
