About this product

Product Information

It's only natural for a beginner to be baffled by the equipment and the lingo of weight training. In this book, you'll find the knowledge and confidence to start a weight training program, either at home or at a gym. Weight Training For Dummies describes more than 150 exercises suitable for rookies and veterans alike. This edition also updates you on the latest in weight training equipment, Web sites, videos, research, and gym classes. Everyone has different reasons for wanting to lift weights. Undoubtedly, many of these reasons have to do with looking better. Sculpted arm and toned "abs" have become somewhat of a fashion statement. But there are even more compelling and, ultimately, more satisfying reasons to lift weights. Here's a reminder of what weight training can do for you: Keep your bones healthy Help control your weight Increase your strength Boost your energy Improve your heart health Improve the quality of life Lifting isn't one of those activities like, say, checkers, that you can competently engage in after a one-minute explanation. Weight Training For Dummies explains the jargon and key safety precautions you need to get started. But the book won't leave you wondering what comes next. This engaging, down-to-earth guide covers all of the following topics and more: Free weights and weight machines The immutable safety laws of weight lifting Avoiding and treating common injuries Tracking your progress Choosing a health club Finding a personal trainer Weight training etiquette Designing your workout Combing weight training with aerobic exercise Nutrition in a nutshell The exercise section of this book demonstrates a wide variety of exercises for all your major muscle groups. Each chapter includes a muscle diagram (so that you can locate your "quads" and your "delts") and an ever-so-brief physiology discussion. Exercises are demonstrated for novices and veterans, home lifters and gym members. You will also find out how to modify many of the exercises if you have trouble with your back, your knees, or other joints.

Dvd arrived quickly and well packaged and taken care of. The item was listed as acceptable and met all of my needs but here's a quick description of what I got: Some wear is visible on the plastic sleeve on the outside of the case. The inside leaflet was still there! The disk has about 3 very notable scratches, although none are bigger than about 2 centimeters. Little to no grime anywhere on the product. Great service!

  • Overall a good basic review

I have lifted weights off and on for most of my adult life but recently decided to be more serious about it. The years have taken their toll leaving me with back and knee and shoulder pains. I feel that lifting weights on a regular basis will help these problems. Experience has taught me to start with the most basic sources of information when I want to learn as much as I can about something and this book is pretty basic (weight lifting in itself is pretty basic). The book provides a good outline of weight lifting and how to be safe. There were only 3 or 4 things in it that I did not already know but if just one of those prevents me from injuring or re-injuring something the cost will have been worth it. The only thing wrong in the book is the part about doing crunches for the ...

  • Weight Training for Dummies

I THINK ALL THE "FOR DUMMIES" BOOKS ARE PRETTY WELL DONE. THEY USE HUMOR TO HOLD YOUR ATTENTION. THIS BOOK IS ESPECIALLY GOOD FOR BEGINNERS I THINK. I'VE BEEN DOING THIS AWHILE

  • Very good source of information on weight training...Serves the purpose.

Handy book, took it's time getting here, but OK, I'm enjoying it. I like the book very much. Gives insight to my goals. Thanks for asking..

  • Great Book

Fabulous book for beginning lifters. Seriously, you don't need to go on a diet. Eat a bit less than you do now, and excercize regularly. It's not rocket science. This book will help.
