About this product

Product Information

Once there was a little doll. Her name was Edith. She lived in a nice house and had everything she needed except someone to play with. She was lonely! Then one morning Edith looked into the garden and there stood two bears! Since it was first published in 1957, The Lonely Doll has established itself as a unique children's classic. Through innovative photography Dare Wright brings the world of dolls to life and entertains us with much more than just a story. Edith, the star of the show, is a doll from Wright's childhood, and Wright selected the bear family with the help of her brother. With simple poses and wonderful expressions, the cast of characters is vividly brought to life to tell a story of friendship.

The Lonely Doll by Dare Wright

This was my favorite book when I was a little girl. I was so excited that I found it again and could share it with my granddaughters (8 and 4 years old) I’m thrilled that they love it too!

  • An angry story of domination, fear and oppression lacking love/inspiration.

This story belongs back in the 1950's and to me, is inappropriate for children in this generation. Interesting from a patriarchal, historical view, but irrelevant to children now. Yes, the pictures are charming and initially, so is the story. Until the little lonely doll and Baby Bear become defiant, belligerant and disrespectful; culminating in corporeal punishment, where the lonely doll gets her lonely bottom spanked. Threatened for crying, fears of abandonment all magically disappear with 'happily ever after' thinking; a punitive and regressive story. There is nothing inspiring nor uplifting or real in this book, except a few cute photos of toys in action.

  • charming retro children's book

Really charming children's book written by and illustrated by the photos of Ms. Dare Wright, in the 1950's. Edith is a lonely doll, who gets her wish for company, in the form of Mr. Bear and Little Bear who show up one day. Mr. Bear takes on a paternal role, and Little Bear becomes her playmate. Humans never figure into the story - the interactions are just between the 3 characters. The photos are a treat. Some parents may object to one point in the story where Mr. Bear deems it necessary to spank Edith and Little Bear for being naughty.

  • Good Purchase

This was a favorite book of my wife's childhood. She liked the surprise.
