The book distinguishes itself by seamlessly integrating various theoretical models, sociocultural factors, research, clinical experiences, and therapies. Ron Comer not only encourages students to think critically about the science and study of mental disorders-he also reveals the humanity behind them. Now in its Fourth Edition, the book builds on its predecessors with an abundance of new material and improved media tools., Concise yet substantive, Comer's brief text clearly synthesizes theoretical models, research, clinical experiences, therapies, and controversies within the context of social and cultural influences. Like a good classroom lecture, Fundamentals weaves the main text, case studies, quotations, critical thinking questions, margin notes, cultural and gender differences, and other important elements into a cohesive narrative that keeps students engaged. Comer encourages students to think critically about the science and study of abnormal psychology. But beyond that, his text reveals the humanity behind the study of psychopathology-the impact of psychological dysfunction on those who suffer from it and their families.

  • Excellent overview of the topic

The book takes its organization from the DSM-4 which is helpful for understanding modern classification of abnormality. Each chapter covers a large umbrella area like anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia. The chapters start with a clinical interview, or patient history, and then go through how each school of psychology understands the disorders etiology and treatment. I find the writing interesting, and easy to read. I love the little side facts from pop culture and research findings included in the book, as well as the illustrative stories. Comer also puts in occasional jokes from the far side and New Yorker. The book is an excellent companion to a course in abnormal psychological functioning. I find my self reading ahead because it is so well written and the topic is fascinating.

  • Abnormal Psycholology

Never, received it and never received a notice that I would not being receiving it. I only figured it out because there was a credit on my account. I needed this text for school and by the time I figured it out - I was not going to receive it, all the used ones were gone from campus! Not to mention I was behind in my readings for my class.

  • Book review

Love it. Needed it for a college course that am currently enrolled in. Will keep the book for future reference.
