About this product

Product Information

This saga of the Civil War, from 1859 to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865, is based on the works and original materials of Pulitzer Prize winner Bruce Catton. It focuses on the trials and conflicts of that national trauma as seen through the eyes and sketches of artist John Geyser, whose own family is torn apart by conflicting political sentiments. This acclamied television production was filmed entirely on location with 160 characters and over 6,300 extras.

    Characters are More Real

I love this Civil War movie. The characters seem like real people, not like glamorous 'soap opera' types. The character of Jonas Steele ( ''Captain'' ) is probably the most mysterious of the group, but he is used for good effect to take is into the War, behind the lines, and into understanding more of the politics of the times. Gregory Peck is very good as President Lincoln, and I really liked John Hammond as artist John Geyser, artist War-Correspondent, sort of a John Singer Sargent type character. The War is well explained along the way. I found myself looking up battles and military officers as they appeared in the movie. I learned a lot. I recommend it. Bobbi

  • Top critical review

    It was a perfect title.

Yes, it was the Blue & the Grey but with the recuts it took out scenes I really liked. I will have to read the descriptions more carefully. It was still good.

  • A Gripping Miniseries

I enjoyed this very much. Never did see it when it aired originally on television. It’s interesting that both sides of the war are seen through the eyes of an artist. Disappointed though that there was not much Historical aspects . They showed battle of bull run Gettysburg address. Abe Lincoln etc. great acting scenery. Some romance. But for the most part a great dramatic series.

  • Decent movie to see

It is an old movie but it kept my interest more than many other really new ones do. I purchased it because my husband, in his youth, was one of the extras and carried a large flag in some of the battle scenes. I purchased it for him to have as he didn't get a copy of the movie as it was made for a 3 part TV series originally.

  • Good title for a Civil War drama.

Good mini-series on the difficulties of the Civil War. Focuses on a family whose members take different sides. Does not portray a lot of needless blood and gore. To my knowledge, fairly historically accurate.
