Reviews
"The most haunting evocation we have of a world dying of radiation after an atomic war." -The New York Times    "The most shocking fiction I have read in years. What is shocking about it is both the idea and the sheer imaginative brilliance with which Mr. Shute brings it off."  -San Francisco Chronicle "A novelist of intelligent and engaging quality, deservedly popular. . . . Nevil Shute was, in brief, the sort of novelist who genuinely touches the imagination and feeling." -The Times(London) From the Trade Paperback edition.

  • One the Beach is really on.......................

After watching the movie a few times with Bryan Brown and Rachel Ward I decided I had to read the book. I'm so glad that I did. The movie is very well done. The book keeps your attention all the way through even if you've watched the movie. There is enough difference in the 2 to keep your attention. I don't know if Nevil Shute is still alive or not but he really hit the nail head with his book and how the world might end. We all know that more then likely the world will end due to Nuclear bombs. Once they go off and hit a few key places it'll only be a matter of time that life as we know it will be done. When you read the book have some kleenex close by. No, this isn't a chick book. It's a book that all adults should read and realize that they ...

  • Best of the genre

I have a weakness for post-apocalyptic literature, which is abundant, and I keep coming back to On the Beach as among the very finest of the genre. Earth Abides by George Stewart is closest but this is better. Faced with the end of human civilization, people pretty much keep to doing what they have always done, rather than run amok. Shute is a fine writer, by the way... the most popular in England in the 1950s but more or less overlooked today. Round the Bend, Trustee from the Toolroom, A Town Like Alice -- all are good reads and herald old values.... enjoy

  • What happens after a nuclear war brings radioactivity to Australia.

It's a great story, but the book is not nearly as good as the movie.

  • On the Beach

Wow what an excellent book. It makes one wonder what they would do if they knew the world as they know it would end on a certain day. This book shows how the people used their time and moved forward in a world that was certain to end. Very thought provoking and a great book for any one that likes to read.

  • A fantastic read. The first book that I read in High Sch

I first read it 40 yrs. ago. I enjoyed it every bit as much 40 years later. This book started my interest in reading, and what a gift that was!
