Women fight to survive the Civil War
According to the director's commentary, the opening scene is supposed to show how fierce women can be. Without the commentary, it's a woman barking at a dog...then a man shoots her in the head. To me, this seemed weird. When the man later reappears in the story, and his actions are rather ambiguous, the audience knows he's a bad guy based on his previous murder of an unarmed woman. The problem with this? Heroine Augusta, who has no previous acquaintance with the man, has reason to mistrust him because he's a Yankee. yet he is handsome, and he hasn't done anything horrible to Augusta. He even stops his partner from murdering her. Without that opening scene, the audience would be uncertain whether this guy has rape or romance on his mind. It slowed down the story, served no real purpose, and to my knowledge there is no cure for rabies. For these reasons, I had to deduct a star from an otherwise perfect film. All the actors were superb. The costumes & buildings appeared historically accurate. Ultimately, the audience sees that women are brave & fierce. The film doesn't need a woman barking at a dog in order to prove that point.

It's a mystery from the beginning. Keeps ones interest. Be warned there are gory dead bodies and a rape scene. Not recommended for kids or even sensitive people, like me! Enjoyed it but seeing once is enough.
