About this product

Product Information

When Professor Frederic M. Wheelock's Latin first appeared in 1956, the reviews extolled its thoroughness, organization, and conciseness; at least one reviewer predicted that the book "might well become the standard text" for introducing students to elementary Latin. Now, five decades later, that prediction has certainly proved accurate. The revised sixth edition of Wheelock's Latin has all the features that have made it the best-selling single-volume beginning Latin textbook, many of them improved and expanded: 40 chapters with grammatical explanations and readings based on ancient Roman authors Self-tutorial exercises with an answer key for independent study A newly enlarged English-Latin/Latin-English vocabulary A rich selection of original Latin readings -- unlike other textbooks, which contain primarily made-up Latin texts Etymological aids Also included are maps of the Mediterranean, Italy, and the Aegean area, as well as numerous photographs illustrating aspects of classical culture, mythology, and historical and literary figures presented in the chapter readings.

Love this book for Latin. Very clear building blocks and exercises interesting from the start.

Overall very pleased with my purchase. Unfortunately the "writing in the margins" is all of the end of chapter exercises written out in the book which renders those exercises noticeably less useful so that I'll need to go through and white them out.

  • Wheelock's Wonderful World of Latin

The book itself is a well written and trains the reader how to translate Latin into English, and does a fairly good job of accomplishing this. Naturally, this is more of a text book then an actual guide on how to learn Latin. The exercises are repetitious (like all text books) with the intent of forcing the reader to EVENTUALLY memorize EVERYTHING. The only downside, however, is that with every new chapter, the author expects the reader (you) to have completely memorized everything from the previous chapter. When used in a class setting this is fine, because the instructor will often take up on the review where the book has failed and all is well. If you're using just the book, however, advancing becomes very difficult (unless, of course, you're one of those odd individuals who has a ...

  • Wheelock's Latin 6th Edition

I bought this book as required for Latin 1010. It's a very good book with lots of practice for each chapter. I highly recommend using the Optional Self-Tutorial Exercises for each chapter which starts on pg 356. The answer key begins on pg 396. For those of you who think Latin will be easy because you're good at learning languages, or know Spanish, French or Italian, you're in for a shock. Latin is like algebra; the only way you'll learn it is to practice, practice, practice, then practice some more. This book offers plenty of practice.

  • What a great deal!!

Great books at a value price. Why pay full price when you can pay a fraction of the price for gently used ones. The book has some wear but nothing that would interfere with reading it.

  • Great for reference, but hard to understand at first.

I bought this book for my Beginning Latin class and so far this book is okay. I was behind the first few days of class, because I couldn't grasp the concept of how to used the basics of the language. This was because the book didn't explain these things all that great. It's great for a reference AFTER you finally understand what the book discusses, but I think it could be put in a simpler form for beginners.
