Owned this book, let daughter borrow it, never saw it again! The book itself is amazing (the reason I went looking for it again). Photos should be taken of content (beautifully detailed), would fly off the shelf. An absolute must for knitters and crocheters.

This is the kind of book that gets passed among friends and family, and once lent you will probably never get it back, it's that good. It is full of tips and how to instructions for almost anything you would want to make. It covers Embroidery, Needlepoint, Knitting, Applique, Quilting, Patchwork, Macrame, Crochet, Rug-making, and Lacework. You would think that the editors stretched themselves too thin by trying to cover so much in one book but they managed to jam as much info about each one as you would find in book dedicated to only one topic. I am particularly impressed with the knitting tips. The describe 5 different cast-on methods AND 5 different bind-off methods! There is a large section on finishing a garment, with instructions for ten different neck lines, 5 different sleeve and ... This is the kind of book that gets passed among friends and family, and once lent you will probably never get it back, it's that good. It is full of tips and how to instructions for almost anything you would want to make. There is a similar section for crochet! There is also a nice selection of stitch patterns with photos in color and very clearly drawn diagrams as well as the succinctly written instructions. There are patterns and projects in each section, they are a little dated, but they only take up a small portion of the book. The focus is the how-to instructions which give you many alternative methods for achieving the same effect. This is a must have for any crafter at whatever level. Sure you can find much of this information on the internet but you would have to spend ALOT of time to compile a reference as handy and full of good techniques as this one book.

I have been a long time enthusiast of the Reader's Digest crafting books. The Sewing book sold me on their style and ease of learning the craft. The COMPLETE GUIDE TO NEEDLEWORK outshines them all. It teaches embroideries with many instructions on stitches (heirloom), Applique, Patchwork, Quilting (including care of quilts), Knitting, Crochet, Lacework, Macrame, & Rug-making. What I find really great about this book are the nice projects the book contains. Embroidery includes patterns such as monogramming/machine embroidery, crewel picture, Place mat & napkin/pulled thread, Table runner/huck, Cutwork, Child's dress, & Corded pillow/black work. I don't need to list them all so I'll name a few more. The Quilting section has a cute Baby quilt pattern & Quilted Evening bag that is quite ... I bought this to replace my original copy that was lost in one of many moves. It may be older ("vintage"), but the instructions are timeless, and the most clearly written and illustrated of any other instruction book I've ever seen. I was even able to teach myself to tat using this book, a task most people said was impossible back in the days before YouTube and other online instruction aids. It's still a great reference for a multitude of stitch patterns in both knitting and crocheting, as well as clear instructions on finishing and constructing garments made in either of these crafts. It also covers numerous forms of embroidery, such as Hardanger, Blackwork, even Huck embroidery, as well as the more traditional cross-stitch and basic embroidery and various forms of ...
