Mary T. Sarnecky author, A History of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps Bob Welch's compelling biography of Lieutenant Frances Slanger illuminates the extraordinary courage and patriotism so emblematic of the valorous Army nurses who served in World War II. His intriguing volume serves as a celebration of these unsung heroines. It represents a valuable contribution to the literature of nursing, women in combat, and military history., James Bradley author, Flags of Our Fathers and Flyboys A young nurse jumped onto the Normandy beach just after D-Day and comforted hundreds of wounded young boys. They beheld her as an angel, but she told them no, they were the real heroes. After a shell ended her life, larger stories obscured her death. Then almost sixty years later, a young author discovered that her memory still burnt brightly in the breasts of many. Bob Welch has done the country a service by recalling Frances Slanger's story. I recommend you enrich your life and read this touching story of an American Nightingale., Judith Bellafaire chief historian of the Women In Military Service for America Memorial Foundation Bob Welch's book may well start a sea change in public consciousness. No one who reads American Nightingale will ever again assume that every military hero killed in action was, is or will be male., Paul Greenberg Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist We have forgotten what they endured, and how much they hoped and fought and sacrificed, the young hearts who came to this country, and gave it their all. This book brings it back. I can't read Frances Slanger's letter to the Stars and Stripes -- written just before she became a casualty herself -- without seeing my own mother's face before me. That letter needs to be reread regularly, especially in these times, and reprinted every Fourth of July. So we'll be reminded, and reheartened., "Bob Welch has done the country a service....I recommend you enrich your life and read this touching story." -- James Bradley, author of Flyboys, "One day the name Frances Y. Slanger will be linked in the annals of the Army Nurse Corps with the same reverence universally accorded Florence Nightingale."-- Kent Hunter,Boston Evening American,1944, "Bob Welch has done the country a service....I recommend you enrich your life and read this touching story."-- James Bradley, author ofFlyboys, Evelyn Benson author, As We See Ourselves: Jewish Women in Nursing Reading American Nightingale is an intensely moving and unforgettable experience....Bob Welch has skillfully woven a rich and colorful narrative which captures the essence of Frances Slanger, RN -- that admirable, high-principled, humble and intelligent "daughter."...Those of us who lived through that period, as well as those who have come afterward, owe a debt of gratitude to Bob Welch for his original work in bringing to our attention the portrait of Frances Slanger, a woman whose life story is unique, timeless, and inspirational., "One day the name Frances Y. Slanger will be linked in the annals of the Army Nurse Corps with the same reverence universally accorded Florence Nightingale." -- Kent Hunter, Boston Evening American, 1944, Hampton Sides author of Ghost Soldiers and Americana Through indefatigable research and a nearly obsessive quest to inhabit a great moment in time, Bob Welch achieves something rare among works of military history: He brings one person, a single extraordinary person, to vivid life upon the page. Read American Nightingale, and you'll never think of D-Day in the same way again.

She and the other nurses of the 45th Field Hospital would soon experience the hardships of combat from a storm-whipped tent amid the anguish of wounded men and the thud of artillery shells. Months later, a letter that Frances wrote to theStars and Stripesnewspaper won her heartfelt praise from war-weary GIs touched by her tribute to them. - l***1 (9)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseI bought a new, shrink-wrapped journal from this seller. It arrived inside a bubble pack mailer from the US Postal Service and then another plastic envelope. It had a dent in the bottom of the cover, which it did not have in the listing picture, so that occurred in transit. It should have been packed in a box to prevent such damage. However, the seller promptly gave me the partial refund I asked for & was courteous. Would buy from seller again, but specify the packing I want ahead of shipping.Antique Monogram Journal [Diary, Notebook] (#365268223518)
