The 14-inch Estwing axe is two tools in one, with a blunt backside sledgehammer that further assists with splitting wood. This wood-cutting tool is made of solid tempered steel with a double-tempered head and is forged in one piece. The axe splits logs along the grain. Great little kindling ave
Works good for splitting dried wood for kindling. Not good for trying to split a bigger piece as the wedge angle is too great for that application. Not designed for that anyway. Cut yourself a L shaped block of wood out of a tree trunk to rest the wood on you are splitting so your hands are out of the way. Cut it tall enough so you don't have to bend down. This is my second Fireside friend. I have two woodstoves and decided I needed one for each stove. It is the most impressive kindling maker I have ever seen. The only drawback is that it is dangerous. Wood burners friend!
I wish I had found this mini maiul 30 years ago when I was burning wood as a primary source of heat! Now, it is a welcome companion camping, when I bring wood just a bit too large.......
