Gilead is a refuge for readers longing for that increasingly rare work of fiction, one that explores big ideas while telling a good story. As John Ames might point out, it's a remarkable thing to consider., Rapturous . . . astonishing . . . Gilead is an inspired work from a writer whose sensibility seems steeped in holy fire., "At a moment in cultural history dominated by the shallow, the superficial, the quick fix, Marilynne Robinson is a miraculous anomaly: a writer who thoughtfully, carefully, and tenaciously explores some of the deepest questions confronting the human species. . . . Synopsis
A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - OPRAH'S BOOK CLUB PICK - WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE FOR FICTION - NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD WINNER - A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK - MORE THAN 1 MILLION COPIES SOLD "Quietly powerful [and] moving." O, The Oprah Magazine (recommended reading) Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award, GILEAD is a hymn of praise and lamentation to the God-haunted existence that Reverend Ames loves passionately, and from which he will soon part. In 1956, toward the end of Reverend John Ames's life, he begins a letter to his young son, an account of himself and his forebears. Ames is the son of an Iowan preacher and the grandson of a minister who, as a young man in Maine, saw a vision of Christ bound in chains and came west to Kansas to fight for abolition: He preached men into the Civil War, then, at age fifty, became a chaplain in the Union Army, losing his right eye in battle. Reverend Ames writes to his son about the tension between his father--an ardent pacifist--and his grandfather, whose pistol and bloody shirts, concealed in an army blanket, may be relics from the fight between the abolitionists and those settlers who wanted to vote Kansas into the union as a slave state. And he tells a story of the sacred bonds between fathers and sons, which are tested in his tender and strained relationship with his namesake, John Ames Boughton, his best friend's wayward son. This is also the tale of another remarkable vision--not a corporeal vision of God but the vision of life as a wondrously strange creation. It tells how wisdom was forged in Ames's soul during his solitary life, and how history lives through generations, pervasively present even when betrayed and forgotten., The 2004 Pulitzer Prize winning novel A New York Times Top-Ten Book of 2004 Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction A PBS Great American Read selection Nearly 25 years after Housekeeping , Marilynne Robinson returns with an intimate tale of three generations, from the Civil War to the 20th century: a story about fathers and sons and the spiritual battles that still rage at America's heart. In the words of Kirkus , it is a novel "as big as a nation, as quiet as thought, and moving as prayer. Matchless and towering." Gilead tells the story of America and will break your heart., A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * OPRAH'S BOOK CLUB PICK * WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE FOR FICTION * NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD WINNER * A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK * MORE THAN 1 MILLION COPIES SOLD "Quietly powerful [and] moving." This is also the tale of wisdom forged during his solitary life and how history lives through generations, pervasively present even when betrayed and forgotten., Twenty-four years after her first novel, "Housekeeping," Marilynne Robinson returns with an intimate tale of three generations from the Civil War to the twentieth century: a story about fathers and sons and the spiritual battles that still rage at America's heart. Writing in the tradition of Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman, Marilynne Robinson's beautiful, spare, and spiritual prose allows "even the faithless reader to feel the possibility of transcendent order" ("Slate"). In the luminous and unforgettable voice of Congregationalist minister John Ames, Gilead reveals the human condition and the often unbearable beauty of an ordinary life.

Trip into an old Preacher's mind during the depression era, written by a modern-day female

This wonderful book seems to be a "diary of memories" of an aged dying father of a young son; who will never know the father because of his failing heart. However, in the book, the father seems to be coming to terms with his past and present, while being led astray by memories of his past. I think the attempt to communicate with the son after his death may not be what the father had in mind, but the author has control of the dying man, so control be hers. You really need to read Lila, by Marilynn Robinson before you read Gilead. I am not sure, but I think Lila was written after Gilead, but no matter - Lila is the first book to read to understand this, pre-sequal. The relationships in the father's life are varied as one would expect of a small town preacher in the Midwest. He's not ...

  • Literate and Civilized.

Wonderful, lyrical depiction of rural American life. I can understand why Barack Obama liked this book.

  • interesting book but a bit slow at times

It can be slow. It is often like listening to your mother or Grandmother tell you about the old days.
