CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND is Steven Spielberg's extraordinary film about a man named Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) who becomes obsessed with meeting extraterrestrials after encountering a UFO on an abandoned road one night. Against the wishes of his wife (Teri Garr) and children, Neary, along with another witness to the sighting (Melinda Dillon), travels to a mysterious mountain where the government has built a landing strip hoping to attract the aliens. Director François Truffaut costars as Claude Lacombe, one of the organizers of the project. Spielberg hoped to follow up the huge success of JAWS with a low-budget film that would be an easy shoot, but, thanks in part to the complicated special effects, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS quickly snowballed into being an expensive endeavor but a commercial and artistic success. No one who has seen the film has ever looked at a plate of mashed potatotes the same way again.

    THIS IS THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY BOX SET OF CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND. IT COMES WITH A BOOKLET AND ALL THREE VERSIONS OF THE FILM. THE ONE FOR ME IS THE ORIGINAL THEATRICAL VERSION. RICHARD DREYFUS IS A MAN WHO KEEPS SEEING A PLACE IN HIS MIND AND HE FINALLY GETS THERE TO SEE WHAT THE GOVERNMENT IS DOING ON THAT MOUNTAIN. THE EFFECTS AND THE MUSIC ARE GREAT. THEY WORK TOGETHER TO TELL THIS TALE OF ALIENS VISITING EARTH. ONE OF SPIELBERG'S EARLY FILMS AND ONE OF THE BEST. ALSO, IF YOU'RE A FAN OF JOHN WILLIAMS MUSIC, THIS IS ONE OF HIS BEST SCORES.     Worth the Wait

    Finally a comprehensive edition of this movie is available on disc. Previous versions are OK, but this one actually has three versions of the movie together on one disc. The interactive features showing where each version differs from the other is also cool, but fans will know most of the differences anyway. This one includes the original theatrical release, which has become hard to come by as the subsequent special edition and director's cut dominated as the versions most widely available. I can honestly say I never actually saw the original until now, and I'm not sure if you can even find it in a stand-alone version. It has become a trend for popular sci-fi films to be replaced by subsquent "special editions" or "director's cut," making the one that started it all hard to find until ...
