One of the best NES sports titles
Another classic Technos Japan title, Super Dodge Ball is a rare competitive NES game that balances simple controls with surprisingly deep gameplay. It's a fast-paced sports game that doesn't take itself too seriously, but also allows for skill and strategy to play a significant role. Solo tournament mode is excellent, with an AI that's just good enough to keep things challenging. PvP matches are a blast, and allow for each player to not only pick a team that favors their play style, but also allows them to assign specific characters to any position. (Each character has a unique special attack.) I spent hours playing this game as a kid - and now that I have it again, I plan to do the same as an adult. They really packed soo much into this little cart! There are new gen games out that can't offer as much as this baby does. It's worth buying an NES for, hands down. There are 3 game modes: World Cup Play (1 Player vs CPU), Versus Play (2 Players vs Each other), and Bean Ball (1 or 2 players vs CPU in free-for-all). Each mode also has 3 skill levels (Easy, Normal, & Difficult). If you ask me, these choices rock! When you get tired of ruling the world, you can dominate your friends. Bean Ball is great for taking your frustrations out on lots of little men. There are 9 teams to choose from: Team USA, All-Stars, England, India, Iceland, China, Kenya, Japan, & USSR (Russia for you ... They have all their own stats (Energy, Power, Catching Ability, etc) and many have unique moves. And most of them look different (although you'll see repeat models, like bald and butt-forehead). Each country boasts its own individual court, scenery, and music, too. If that's not enough, some courts even behave differently: Iceland's is slippery ice, Kenya's is slowing dirt, etc. Game play is simple: grab the ball and hurl it at your opponents. Besides the basic Throw and Pass, each character has 3 "super moves" - which often result in hilarious face poundings. You have the run & throw, the run-jump & throw, and the run backwards-jump and throw. These aren't always as easy to pull off as they may seem, so advanced players can still be taken down by opponents who know how to catch... Graphics are classic NES quality. Unfortunately, the characters tend to blink in and out most of the time - not unusual to have half your guy "invisible." But you get used to that glitch as you get used to the game. The ball usually remains visible (save the super move which makes it invisible on purpose) and you can kinda guess where your guy is supposed to be. The music is catchy, but can get on your nerves after awhile. Kind of like Tetris music, you know? You'll get irritated sometimes, but you also find yourself singing the tunes during the day. Overall, this game is near and dear to me. Even when you have it "mastered," you'll go back for round after round. I recommend it for novice and advanced gamers alike - I played it when I was 8, now I play it at 28. If it doesn't already have one, this game deserves a cult following. Love you, Super Dodgeball!

Beaming an opponent or dodging a ball is very fun and addictive. The music, characters, background, and difficulty change each level and keep the game fresh and interesting. There aren't throw combos, but there are faster glowing ball throws and a throw where the ball splits 3 ways. Overall a great value and worth adding to any collection.
