Synopsis
In this new edition, the Laubin?s have added a tremendous amount of new material on day-to-day living in the tipi: the section on Indian cooking has been expanded to include a large number and range of Indian foods and recipes, as well as methods of cooking over an open fire, with a reflector oven, and with a ground oven; there are new sections on making buckskin, making moccasins, and making cradle boards; there is a whole new section on child care and general household hints., When the first edition of this book was published in 1957, the art of making a tipi was almost lost, even among American Indians. Since that time a tremendous resurgence of interest in the Indian way of life has occurred, resurgence due in part, at least, to the Laubins' life-long efforts at preservation and interpretation of Indian culture. As The Indian Tipi makes obvious, the American Indian is both a practical person and a natural artist. Indian inventions are commonly both serviceable and beautiful. Other tents are hard to pitch, hot in summer, cold in winter, poorly lighted, unventilated, easily blown down, and ugly to boot. The conical tipi of the Plains Indian has none of these faults. It can be pitched by one person. It is roomy, well ventilated at all times, cool in summer, well lighted, proof against high winds and heavy downpours, and, with its cheerful fire inside, snug in the severest winter weather. Moreover, its tilted cone, trim smoke flaps, and crown of poles, presenting a different silhouette from every angle, form a shapely, stately dwelling even without decoration. In this new edition the Laubins have retained all the invaluable aspects of the first edition, and have added a tremendous amount of new material on day-to-day living in the tipi: the section on Indian cooking has been expanded to include a large number and range of Indian foods and recipes, as well as methods of cooking over an open fire, with a reflector oven, and with a ground oven; there are new sections on making buckskin, making moccasins, and making cradle boards; there is a whole new section on child care and general household hints. Shoshoni, Cree, and Assiniboine designs have been added to the long list of tribal tipi types discussed. This new edition is richly illustrated with color and black and white photographs, and drawings to aid in constructing and living in the tipi. It is written primarily for the interested amateur, and will appeal to anyone who likes camping, the out-of-doors, and American Indian lore.

Book arrived on time. The wrong dust jacket was on the book, but the seller was very nice and immediately offered return or partial credit. Very easy to work with this seller. $10 shipping for a hardback seemed a little pricey although it’s been a while since I’ve mailed a book. Thanks for a great transaction.

The book showed wear, but nothing that I wouldn't have done myself over the course of reading it. It just shows that it was good enough that someone else took a lot of time with it because of it's message. I'm pleased. Ordinarily I would have protested the shipping, but the sellers deducted the cost from the book's value, so I figured it all worked out and I have a good bible study book for show for it all. Thanks

Great book, very informative, highly recomended.

Excellent book on the Native American Tipi. Full of history and the practical use, from design and style of various tribes to set up and use, wether you plan on using a Tipi for camping or long term use you will find a lot of great information to help you along the way, including decorating and primitive furnishing for comfort and function., also contains great information on making your own Tipi and furnishings. Highly recommend this book wether you plan to use a Tipi or as a reference for someone studying the history of Plains Indian living.

  • The Indian Tipi---by Reginald Laubin, Second editionl

Very good book about how various tribes built and lived in tipi's. The book has lots of line drawings, B/W photo's,and 16 pages of color pictures. It is very interesting to read about how the indians survived in them.. and the pictures they painted on them and their meanings. For example page 238 describes"...The chiefs tipi might NOT be the nicest one in the camp... and might in fact might be one of the poorest! Because the chief is regarded as the father of the tribe and is often called upon to help those in need." If you find such facts as that interesting, you too will like the book. I'm not sure what the 2nd edition has that the 1st edition doesn't, but I suspect it is the 16 color pages of pictures and a "history of the tipi" by Stanley Vestal.

  • THE Tipi Bible

The Laubin's wrote this book in 1957 and it is STILL THE TIPI BIBLE. This is the definitive work on tipis. It includes diagrams and descriptions of how each tribe made their tipis a little different. It also includes the particulars of the things that were in a tipi and the proper use of those furnishings. Proper indian etiquette is another important section of the book. The Laubin's became more Sioux than many of the native blood Sioux indians. If you need information about tipis, this is your book. The best!
