P. (um 1433 bis 1527) zum ersten Mal 1499 von Aldus Manutius zu Venedig gedruckt wurde, hat sie Unz hlige in ihren Bann geschlagen. Die in einer Kunstsprache aus Italienisch, Latein und Griechisch verfa te Liebesgeschichte des Poliphilo und seiner Geliebten Polia fasziniert sowohl im Ganzen als auch in seinen Teilen: ausf hrliche Beschreibungen kolossaler Bauten, geometrischer Parkanlagen und heidnischer Rituale. Erlesene Objekte stehen neben symboltr chtigen Speisefolgen, umflirrt von Geschmeide und durchsichtigen Gew ndern ber den verf hrerischen K rpern neckender Nymphen. D st're Allegorien treten auf. Diana, Amor und Venus treiben ihr Spiel mit verworrenen Gef hlen und einer doppelb digen Erotik - all dies illustriert mit wirkungsm chtigen Holzschnitten. So vielf ltig wie der Inhalt des Werkes erweist sich auch dessen Rezeption: Es bef rderte die Emblematik, lie den Formschnitt und den Knotengarten wiederaufleben. Es wurde und wird viel zitiert und teilweise, paraphrasierend oder ganz, ins Franz sische, Englische und Spanische bertragen. Die Hypnerotomachia inspirierte etwa den Belvedere des Bramante, den Elefantenobelisken des Bernini und die Boboli-G rten. Etliche Motive und Szenen finden sich in Malerei und Graphik. Und eine Unzahl von Deutungstraditionen und Ans tzen besch ftigt sich bis heute damit, dem Buch seine Geheimnisse zu entlocken. Der hier vorliegende Band mit in den Text eingeschobenen Anmerkungen verfolgt zwei Anliegen: Zum einem soll das Werk seinen vielen Interessenten in m glichst getreuer bersetzung zug nglich gemacht und ihm hierzulande ein breiteres Publikum gewonnen werden. Zum anderen soll diese Ausgabe die Grundlage f r eine fundierte Kommentierung seitens der Wissenschafts- und Technikgeschichte, der Baukunde und des historisch arbeitenden Kunsthandwerks legen.
