Guizot a donc bien fait de confier cet artiste minent la traduction de la lgende inscrite au-dessous du fronton de cet difice : Aux grands hommes la patrie reconnaissante. Il a bien fait d'accepter le programme propos par M. David, et de laisser au statuaire une entire libert, car il est bien rare que les programmes rdigs dans les bureaux soient en rapport avec les moyens dont le peintre ou le sculpteur dispose. Si M. Guizot, en choisissant M. David, n'a consult que l'opinion publique, nous devons lui savoir gr de sa docilit ; s'il a obi son got personnel, nous devons louer sa clairvoyance. M. d'Argout, qui, plusieurs fois, a prouv la chambre combien il est incapable de comprendre l'importance et la dignit de l'art, s'tait effray du programme de M. David, et avait arrt les travaux prparatoires du fronton. Heureusement M. Thiers, en arrivant au ministre, s'est ht de lever le veto de M. d'Argout, et les travaux ont t repris selon la volont primitive de M. David. Il est fcheux que le caprice, l'ignorance ou la timidit d'un homme parfaitement tranger la peinture et la statuaire, ait ralenti la dcoration du Panthon ; mais, maintenant que l'oeuvre est acheve, nous oublions volontiers M. d'Argout pour M.
