Synopsis
Paris in 1900 marked the first time that the walls began to break down between the fine and decorative arts. This book explores French art nouveau sculpture and the aesthetic and cultural climate that gave rise to it., This is the first book dedicated to this highly popular art form and will show about 275 color images, far more than the sum total of sculpture in all the generalist Art Nouveau books Artists featured include Sarah Bernhardt, Maurice Bouval, Rupert Carabin, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Charles Korschann and Raoul Larche Accompanies an exhibition to be held at the Macklowe Gallery, New York, from 9 November- 31 December 2011Dynamic Beauty: Sculpture of Art Nouveau Paris is the first book to seriously explore French Art Nouveau sculpture and the aesthetic and cultural climate that gave rise to it. Paris in 1900 marked the first time that the walls began to break down between the 'fine' and 'decorative' arts. Artists were as influenced by Symbolist poetry as by Japanese design, and fascinated by eroticism in equal measure to their excitement about the new technology of electric light. Aided by the Collas machine, artists and foundries created sculptures in various sizes for a newly emergent upper middle class that was paradoxically eager to live in both the modern world of the automobile and the ancien monde of collecting.Jessica Goldring is the lead author of Dynamic Beauty and received a Fulbright Scholarship for her work on Erika Mann'sPepper Mill Cabaret.Frederica Todd Harlow contributed the essay The Exposition Universelle: Paris 1900.Jessica Veith contributed the essay The Man Behind the Mask: The Sculpture of Rupert Carabin. She is a PhD candidate in Fine Arts at New York University.Lloyd Macklowe is the exhibition curator.Benjamin Macklowe is the lead editor for the book. He also contributed the foreword and epilogue.Kathleen Moore is the assistant editor for the book and wrote all the captions.Bernard Cohen contributed the artists' biographies.

  • Disappointing

After waiting over a month to receive the book, it arrived damaged. But in looking over the book after notifying the sender of the problem, I had a chance to look over the book. While it is lovely to see the Art Nouveau pieces all in color and nicely photographed, I found the book disappointing. I feel there was not enough representation of other artists and selections were too repetitive in style and theme. I also felt there could have been a lot more information provided on the artists and their pieces that were selected. And as the book was expensive, I did not feel the price was justified. So, rather than exchanging the book for another undamaged one, I opted to simply return it. It just wasn't worth it.
