Based on an updated version of the game engine used for the Revolutionary War strategy title Birth of America, Ageod's American Civil War lets players relive the enormity of America's great internecine conflict. Strategists can follow in the footsteps of Ulysses S. Grant and secure victory for the Union Army, or rewrite the course of history in favor of Robert E. Lee and the Confederacy. Players can take control of dozens of troops, organize divisions, manage supply lines through sea, river, and rail, and maneuver political minefields to promote the best leaders to command positions. There are more than 300 uniquely talented historical leaders to help guide each side through 15 different scenarios and five campaigns, including the all-encompassing Grand Campaign. Each scenario is subject to hundreds of random events that create an element of surprise and render no two games alike.

American Civil War at the strategic level
Coming across this game in Best Buy, I was very interested as I have a life long passion for ACW history. From games, miniatures, re-enacting and collecting, I am a season player of most things ACW. As much detail as the box was indicating I was ok with facing a steep learning curve. And after a month of playing, I am still learning. Running the nation during the ACW is a daunting task. With as much intricacy and detail as there is in AACW, it makes for an investment to learn this game. First of all, I do commend the makers of the game. The amount and depth of detail is truly amazing. Every leader, unit, name and place are well researched. I also a big fan of area movement as opposed to artificial hexes or square overlays. I also like the fact that running the war effort is truly a daunting task. However, I am not sure the Lincoln would be able to discern how to make things run smoothly in AACW. If you are looking for an investment in time, then trying to make sense of the supply rules and the army corp division rules is just that. As much as I enjoy the naval aspect, often badly neglected in other titles, the joy of building historical ships such as the Monitor and Virginia and even the Dunderburg. Trying to keep your fleets is not easy. The rule book lacks a lot of the detail on how to generate or keep supply flowing to ships at sea or on blockade. It is hard to even mount a blockade as the unit called a blockade flotilla is one of the most expensive units and yet does not by itself blockade a port or even the over all blockade. Of the games I have started, it seems better to buy the individual ships than the flotillas. And trying to coordinate an amphibious landing requires an amazing amount of planning and forethought and doesn't always work. Considering that the combat successes that the Union had in 1861 came from amphibious attacks, this should be easier in the game, rather than trying to figure it out by trial and error. On the other hand the land battles are pretty straight forward. If you have better command structure and better units units than your opponent, then you are assured of a victory. Victories are supposed to affect National Morale but it is another feature that is not explained very well even though one can loose if it drops too much. All in all, there are a lot of good, even great things about AACW. The detail, the flavor, the ability to play different campaigns and both sides make one want to play. The steep learning curve of how to do everything and not be sure of what the outcome will be makes it hard for anyone not familiar with war games to be able to get into the game easily. It has a lot of potential, but one will have to work at it to be rewarded.

The game has lots of potential. I'm sure it works well as a simulation. But the desire to put in fanciful graphics on the map and the overly and needlessly cumbersome movement and other rules make the game pretty much unplayable for someone who has a job or other interests in life. Designers need to learn.....clean easy intuitive interfaces matter more with real wargame grognards than icons with heads of leaders and stylized graphics. I've played computer wargames since they came out, and this has to be one of the most difficult to comprehend ever. And needlessly so. What a shame.The game has lots of potential. Excellent strategy game!!
This game is an excellent and realistic adaptation of civil war events and strategy. Whether you fight for the north or south as Lincoln or Davis you have an opportunity to rewrite the history books by managing troops and resources and conquering the continent for your nation. I highly recommend this game to anyone with a love of history or strategy.

A very in-depth game for anyone into historical games.
Was a bit more difficult than I thought it would be. Many many moving parts and different ways to conduct your opperations in both the North and Southern Armies.

Overall good layout of the war.Brings in all the particulars(fog of war).You have to think like the Enemy as to what he would do or not do in a situation,but sometimes just go on a hunch.
