A decent, general purpose lens, except for the plastic mounting base
I was looking for a wide angle to short telephoto zoom lens to fill in the middle of my kit--my other two lenses are a Pentax DA 18-55mm zoom and a Sigma 70-210mm zoom--and this lens fit the bill nicely, especially for the price I paid. Quantaray was the house brand for camera accessories including lenses, flashes, filters, and camera bags sold through the now defunct Ritz/Wolf Camera stores. Ironically, I bought this lens on eBay the day after my local Ritz Camera closed its doors as part of the company’s final liquidation. I’ve always heard their lenses were of decent quality for non-professional applications and this lens seems to bear that out. My understanding is this particular lens is based on a Sigma design with a slightly longer focal length (28-90mm vs. 28-80mm) than its Sigma ... There is nothing in the documentation to indicate whether or not the lens was actually manufactured by Sigma, but online comparisons I’ve seen show the two lenses to be nearly identical in construction. I have only had a limited opportunity to try the lens out, but my impressions have been mostly positive so far. Images are sharp, even down to very fine detail. The build quality seems comparable to my Sigma 70-210mm lens. The zoom and focusing rings have a nice action, damped just enough to feel in control. The manual f-stop ring is also a plus. My main criticism of the lens so far is its plastic mounting base. I have to question its durability compared with the metal mounting bases of my Sigma and Pentax lenses. Perhaps this was a corner Ritz cut to give the lens a cost advantage over its Sigma counterpart. Functionally, the lens seems to work fine and takes great pictures. I believe it will serve its purpose well as a good, general purpose lens for those times when I don’t want to carry my entire kit with me.

This lens (28-90mm) has the perfect range to be a good general use lens for my camera, and the price I got from this seller was excellent. I have two other Quantaray lenses, so I was not worried about the quality of this brand. I realize that having a proprietary Pentax lens would have been the best choice, but my budget did not allow for it at this time. So far, I am happy with the quality of the pictures we have taken with this lens.This lens (28-90mm) has the perfect range to be a good general use lens for my camera, and the price I got from this seller was excellent. I have two other Quantaray lenses, so I was not worried about the quality of this brand. I realize that having a proprietary Pentax lens would have been the best choice, but my budget did not allow for it at this time. So far, I am happy with the quality of the pictures we have taken with this lens.

A real sleeper - surprisingly good
From what I've read, this Japanese-made lens was manufactured by Sigma; its appearance and specifications are very similar to a Sigma 28-80mm lens. I can't give this lens an Excellent rating because it's not an outstanding lens, but at its price point (less than $50), it's a real gem. Other autofocus lenses at this price point are generally below average in sharpness, color and contrast. But the Quantaray is quite sharp — as sharp as my kit lens (Pentax DA L II 18-55mm). The color and contrast are decent. The focusing speed is average. It's a screw-driven focusing lens, so it will have the associated focusing sound. The macro function at 90mm (1:2.33) is quite nice, though it can be challenging to get it into and out of macro mode. You have to zoom to 90mm, then focus on something close, ... So if you need a near-macro, short zoom lens, this is a great option.
