About this product

Product Information

In this haunting and riveting firsthand account, a survivor of Jim Jones's Peoples Temple opens up the shadowy world of cults and shows how anyone can fall under their spell. "A suspenseful tale of escape that reads like a satisfying thriller.... The most important personal testimony to emerge from the Jonestown tragedy." -- Chicago Tribune A high-level member of Jim Jones's Peoples Temple for seven years, Deborah Layton escaped his infamous commune in the Guyanese jungle, leaving behind her mother, her older brother, and many friends. She returned to the United States with warnings of impending disaster, but her pleas for help fell on skeptical ears, and shortly thereafter, in November 1978, the Jonestown massacre shocked the world. Seductive Poison is both an unflinching historical document and a suspenseful story of intrigue, power, and murder.

  • A Definitive Book about Jonestown!

Deborah Layton was one of the lucky ones. She managed to escape the carnage and horror only months before November 18,1978 when Jim Jones and his flock of over 900 men, women, and children of all ages died from cyanide poisoning. Deborah was the one to alert authorities about the immediate danger about Jones and his people but it fell on deaf ears until Congressman Leo Ryan decided to investigate and his visit would be the catalyst for the cult's self-destruction by their own hands. This book educated and enlightened me a lot about Deborah Layton who became a high power figure in Jones' elite team until she had enough and escape. She had left behind a pregnant sister-in-law, her cancer ridden mother, and her devoted brother behind as well as the hundreds of others who were a friend, ...

  • Seductive Poison

I have never read a memoir that was this honest or this terrifying. Deborah Layton was a member of the People's Temple for 7 years. She was one of Jim Jones trusted few. This is a true "insider account" of what happened. Ms Layton has the rare ability of pulling the reader into the story. It allows you to feel and understand the working of a cult from the inside out.. You see the path that led her to Jones and the bravery it took for her to leave. As a confused and rebellious adolescent Layton was attracted to Jim Jones' religious movement for its radical teachings on inter racialism and social justice. As a member of his inner circle, she saw things that made her secretly question him, though she remained faithful to his socialist vision. Layton paints a graphic picture of how Jones ...

  • Captivating Read!

This book provided another unique angle to understand the Jonestown massacre. The author was vulnerable and honest, which made for a captivating read!
