A Boy Named Charlie Brown
This is the forth in the Charlie Brown series, following the made for tv "A Charlie Brown Christmas", "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving", and "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown." It is also the very first full-length animation by Charles Schulz, produced in 1969. It has all of the Peanuts gang in it: Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Schroeder, Pigpen, Patty, Sally, Snoopy and the rest. The movie starts out with Charlie Brown making a home made kite and then tries unsuccessfully several times to fly it. Then, Charlie is getting ready for the baseball season. He gets to the field to find the pitching mound covered with dandelions. But the girls, Lucy and Sally, won't let him get rid of them. The wisdom is great. Linus says to Charlie "Losing isn't everything." Charlie says "Losing isn't ... And we have the famous scene where Charlie tries to kick the football and Lucy pulls it away at the last second with the expected results. This film has all the wonderful aspects of why everyone loves the Peanuts gang and it is faithful to the comic strip that has been in newspapers for 40 years. This is a wonderful film that everyone in the family will enjoy.

This Charlie Brown classic has some wonderful moments-Charlie Brown struggling to fly a kite, pitch the first baseball game of the season, and compete in a spelling bee. Snoopy steals every scene, and is featured in a montage of skating and hockey that is very vibrant and colorful. Linus struggles after loaning his precious blanket to Charlie Brown, and Lucy is at her best. One song was very mean, "Failure Face," and I skip over it when it is playing. However, as a whole, I would highly recommend this-it is much better than I remembered it as a child, and there is a scene where Schroeder plays a Beethoven classic that is reminiscent of "Fantasia." Most of the Peanuts gang is featured in this movie, although some are missing, since this is an early movie and other characters were introduced ... Being a huge fan of this movie I had to buy this DVD. I'm especially fond of the movie's animation, which is the best of ANY Peanuts video in my opinion, and the jazzy soundtrack/score by Vince Guaraldi and others. On a technical note the DVD is well-designed with a simple interface. On the negative side, it's not quite as well restored as I predicted it would be-some blue skies, for ex., contain dirty specks. (The audio quality is excellent, though) Also, it would be nice if this DVD contained extras with respect to its making.
