About this product

Product Information

This Cinemascope extravaganza is a awash in color, fabulous choreography, and a tremendous soundtrack, which includes "Lovely to Look At," "You're Devastating," "Yesterdays," "Opening Night," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," and several other hits. Comic genius Red Skelton stars as comedian Al Marsh, who has recently inherited half a dress shop from his aunt. Al needs the money to fund a Broadway production, so he convinces his pals Tony and Jerry to come along with him to sell his share in the salon. Arriving in Paris, the three men discover that the salon is in the red and hurtling toward bankruptcy. Marsh's partners turn out to be adorable sisters, and Tony comes up with a grand plan to save the salon--turn it into a singing and dancing fashion review. Like many of the products of the early 1950s, when Hollywood studios strove to differentiate film from the incipient television medium, the strengths of LOVELY TO LOOK AT lie in its garish color and the spectacle of song and dance.

  • Quirky MGM musical with great dancing

This 1952 remake of the Astaire-Rogers-Irene Dunne-Randolph Scott is a quirky MGM musical. The music and singing of Howard Keel and the late great Kathryn Grayson is fine. However, the movie's highlights are the dancing scenes of husband-and-wife Gower and Marge Champion. In this movie, they are truly as good as Astaire and Rogers. Red Skelton in the Randolph Scott role is sometimes funny, sometimes annoying. Don't expect a great retelling of the tired story. The direction isn't good, except for Vincent Minelli's stint directing the enjoyable last musical piece. Warning: The garish Technicolor of the 1950's is in full bloom during this movie.

  • 1952 Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel & Red Skelton Musical

Gold, pure gold...~♥~ This 1952 film surprised the heck out of me because it's fabulous and yet, I'd never ever heard of it! That's what happens when we're channeled into the "top 40 mentality" rutt. Red Skelton plays comedian (in a musical, singing no less!) Al Marsh (aka Al Wodzscyngkic--his real name considered to be too long to be in marquee lights). His acting chums, Tony Naylor (Howard Keel), a domineering over-present singing character & Jerry (Gower Champion, the dancer), a more low-key talented dancer, all have a great plan for a Broadway production, but no money to back it. As fate would have it, Al's Parisian Aunt Roberta (never seen), dies & leaves him a small fortune; or that's what all 3 chums believe when they 1st get the news of Al's good fortune. Their co-performer, ...

  • Thoroughly Enjoyable Antique Film

What a relief films like this is! Pure entertainment with a very real view of the evolution of filmmaking technology. When color film first came out it was only in two colors. Technicolor has all three. The filmmakers of movies like this one were eager to show off the new technology. The talented cast acting, dancing, singing and doing comedy in this movie are legends. Highly recommended to the whole family since it is wholesome, as most of the older films of this genre usually are.
