About this product

Product Information

I was unconscious. I'd stopped breathing. I don't know how long it lasted, but the engines and drivers that keep the human machine functioning at a mechanical level must have trip-switched, responding to the stillness with a general systems panic. Autopilot failure--switch to emergency manual override. This is how my life started, my second life. So begins The Raw Shark Texts, the startlingly original debut novel from Steven Hall that is already electrifying booksellers and publishers all over the world. Eric Sanderson wakes up one day with no idea who or where he is. A note instructs him to call a Dr. Randle, who informs him that he is undergoing yet another episode of memory loss and that for the last two years--since the tragic death of his great love, Clio, while vacationing in Greece--he's been suffering from an acute disassociative disorder. But there may be more to the story, or it may be a different story altogether. As Eric Sanderson begins to examine letters and papers left behind by the first Eric Sanderson and the staggering tale they seem to contain, he and the reader embark on a quest to recover the truth and to escape the predatory forces that threaten to devour him. Moving with the pace and momentum of a superb thriller, exploring ideas about language and information as well as identity, The Raw Shark Texts is a brilliant novel about the magnitude of love and the devastating effect of losing that love. It will dazzle you, it will move you, and it will leave an indelible imprint like nothing you have read in a long time.

Reviews
Razor sharp, it pulls you in from the first page. Eric Sanderson has lost his identity, and his journey to get it back will blow your mind. -- Geoffrey B. Jennings, Reading The Raw Shark Texts reminded me of the experience I had first reading Infinite Jest and House of Leaves--Here is a white-hot new talent who has created a different kind of landscape for words--a place where words can actually save you--and the deeper you read, the better it gets. His book is a high-concept myth told with popular conventions, and it will no doubt inspire a cult following. -- Jamie Kornegay, Steven Hall has delivered a trippy story, a meditation on love and loss (the kind of soul-crushing, impossible loss that makes one believe in conceptual fish), a thriller that will haunt you. Pass it on to a friend. Commence debate. -- Mickey Rapkin, Try saying The Raw Shark Texts ten times, as fast as you can... I couldn't either. But after reading Steven Hall's remarkable new novel I'm confident The Raw Shark Texts will be on everyone's lips when it debuts this spring. When a novel this inventive, this literary, is combined with a narrative that is this taut and this riveting, the only thing for a bookseller to do is learn how to repeat the title over and over again without screwing it up, because I'm confident all of us will be recommending it endlessly to anyone who'll listen. -- Mitchell Kaplan, Not since Fight Club have I read a book that sizzled with such fierce originality and searing vision as Steven Hall's electrifying debut novel. . . . The Raw Shark Texts pulls you under like a riptide, leaving you exhausted, exhilarated, and gasping for air." -- Brad Thomas Parsons

Super impressed with this seller! They had the best price by far for this book! Both the cost of the book and the shipping fee was far better than average! The book came exactly as described, it was well packaged and quite a bit earlier than expected! The seller was polite and replied quickly to my messages. I’ll definitely make another purchase soon! WONDERFUL book! Better than described, in just like new condition [not just good]. Packaged very carefully, shipped very securely. Great seller, would buy from again in a heartbeat! No communication occurred, but I imagine it would have been as good as the rest of their customer service. Very happy with purchase, thank you very much!

  • For once, believe the hype!

Okay, put aside the clever viral marketing campaign, the endless forum discussions on secret meanings, the literary and cinematic references, the debate about what the names of the characters actually represent...oh, alright, you can't! Aside from the hype, what I thought I read was a love story cleverly framed for the cyber generation - too glib I know for such a great read, but that is as pithy as one can make it for such a work. Others would jump at me and say that it is about identity, memory, the future ability of AI - but I still say that the love stories between the first Eric Sanderson and Clio Aames, and the second Eric Sanderson and Scout (ah, are they the same people, did the former couple ever exist, etc. etc.) form the basis of most things that the plot hangs on. I'd say it ...

  • Worth the Money!!

very intresting read. If you liked inception then you'll love this. It has some vulgar language but other than that its good.Im only about half through it but still i highly recommend reading.

  • Conceptual fish are cool.

I enjoyed reading this book, and I read it pretty quickly. My only complaint is that the ending wasn't very encompassing, but the over all story itself kept me interested.
