Incredible Eye Opener
This is a real eye-opener for anyone sitting around complacent and happy with the times. Although some of the novel stretches the willing suspension of disbelief and there's a lot of bravado, it leaves one with the belief that tyranny can arise and can be defeated. Mostly, though, it's a roadmap to the way a group might prepare for survival and, subsequenty, survive in very, very tough and almost unthinkable times. I did find it was poorly edited in that there were three chapters that were "wedged" in nearly without purpose. They broke up the narrative for pretty much no good reason. The number one rule of novel writing is: cut, cut, cut unnecessary material. In that, this novel failed to some degree, although from an informational standpoint one can understand why the chapters were ... Evading mobs of desperate, out-of-control citizens who have turned Chicago into a wasteland of looting and mayhem, this novel's protagonists make their way to a shared secure ranch in the wilds of northern Idaho. In Patriots, Rawles fully develops the critical themes of the importance of self-reliance, teamwork, preparedness, and dedication to our Constitution and our God. In it he explores the possibilities and what if of a total collapse of the civilized world that we have come to know and upon which we depend. Imagine, if you will, that the economy spins out of control and takes civilized society with it. Imagine this event making the Great Depression look like a walk in the park. How would one survive or thrive during such a chaotic experience? This book is very well researched, and best of all, it is also very interesting to read. It's a bit heavy on gun info so guys will love that and the women warriors in this story are inspiring. Several years ago this book might have been simply an interesting work of fiction, but now in the post-9/11 world it is something to think seriously about. The circumstances in this book are quite possible, more so than any of us would like to admit. I strongly recommend "Patriots" to anyone who's ever wondered what would happen should the day come when they dialed 911 and nobody answered.(Remember Katrina, Hurricane Andrew and the LA Riots?) Read "Patriots" and find out. It is definitely time well spent. However, let me offer a word of warning. Pick up "Patriots" and you won't want to put it down until its finished! You never know when the lights will go out!

The survivalist tutor, the best!
Over the last few years, I've purchased 5 of this book to share with friends who are like minded about survival. I've read no better book that describes a great novel, a bountiful source for survival "stuff" all kinds and how to handle the widest variety of post apocalyptic scenarios. I'm an "ole" retired Marine; I have the experience and training to make the aforementioned comments.

If you are a prepper or enjoy disaster stuff, then I HIGHLY recommend this!
DON'T BUY THIS if you are expecting high brow literature. Having said that, I did actually enjoy reading it. However, DO BUY THIS if you are interested in one man's take (the author's)on disaster preparedness and how to survive a Without Rule of Law (WROL)situation. In this regard, this novel is chock full of useful ideas and suggestions. This is a "how to" manual camoflaged in the guise of fiction. Be forewarned - there is a fair amount of Christian allusions in the novel, which in no way detracts from the practical knowledge the author is conveying. However, if you are hostile to Christianity, then you might consider passing on Patriots. Only gave it 4 out of 5 stars because of it's literary shortcomings.DON'T BUY THIS if you are expecting high brow literature. Having said that, I did actually enjoy reading it. Great book. Have read two other books in this series. Well researched and written. Author delivers a great book from Christian perspective, and without profanity. Recommend all his books.
