About this product

Product Information

Hailed as prophet of modern war and condemned as a harbingerof modern barbarism, William Tecumseh Sherman is themost controversial general of the American Civil War. "War iscruelty, and you cannot refine it," he wrote in fury to the Confederatemayor of Atlanta, and his memoir is filled with dozensof such wartime exchanges. With the propulsive energy andintelligence that marked his campaigns, Sherman describesstriking incidents and anecdotes and collects dozens of his incisiveand often outspoken wartime orders and reports. Thiscomplex self-portrait of an innovative and relentless Americanwarrior provides firsthand accounts of the war's crucial events-Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, the Atlanta campaign, themarches through Georgia and the Carolinas. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation's literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America's best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.

Super impressed with this seller! They had the best price by far for this book! Both the cost of the book and the shipping fee was far better than average! The book came exactly as described, it was well packaged and quite a bit earlier than expected! The seller was polite and replied quickly to my messages. I’ll definitely make another purchase soon! WONDERFUL book! Better than described, in just like new condition [not just good]. Packaged very carefully, shipped very securely. Great seller, would buy from again in a heartbeat! No communication occurred, but I imagine it would have been as good as the rest of their customer service. Very happy with purchase, thank you very much!

  • Great history by the one who lived it, made it.

written similar to a diary by an obviously educated man...the first chapters tell of his military encounters with men whom history has made famous (Fremont, Ord, Stockton, Kearney, etc) and offers a scenic view of California in the pre-Mexican war era, trips to Monterey, the mission at San Luis Obispo...places I have been. I'm looking forward to the approaching Civil War days, and Indian suppressions...book in beautiful shape, no marks...looks 'never read before'...the type is a little small font, but very clear.
