  • For a different flavor of Heavy Metal

    This is the first album by former Helloween guitarist and vocalist Kai Hansen. And while it is written as intended as a one-off side project it became a better band than Helloween ever did and is still going. If you liked Helloween and Judas Priest and Iron Maiden but wish the songs were more positive and with a sci-fi twist rather than a dark and evil slant (Priest/Maiden)then this band is for you. The 2nd album was a bit weaker (helped by bonus tracks on the 2003 remaster) but the next 4 studio albums are very good and they stay that way. Oddly enough the 1997 Karakoke album (instrumental versions of previous songs) even holds up very well among the other studio work. That is not to say Gamma Ray's vocals and lyrics are bad. No, they are great but the music is solid too so try Gamma ...
