About this product

Product Information

Charles Hapgood's classic 1966 book on ancient maps is back in print after 20 years. Hapgood produces concrete evidence of an advanced worldwide civilization existing many thousands of years before ancient Egypt. He has found the evidence in many beautiful maps long known to scholars, the Piri Reis Map that shows Antarctica, the Hadji Ahmed map, the Oronteus Finaeus and other amazing maps. Hapgood concluded that these maps were made from more ancient maps from the various ancient archives around the world, now lost. Hapgood also concluded that the ancient mapmakers were in some ways much more advanced scientifically than Europe in the 16th century, or than the ancient civilizations of Greece, Egypt, and Babylonian. Not only were these unknown people more advanced in mapmaking than any people prior to the 18th century, it appears they mapped all the continents. The Americas were mapped thousands of years before Columbus. Antarctica was mapped when its coasts were free of ice. There is evidence that these people must have lived when the ice age had not yet ended in the Northern Hemisphere and when Alaska was still connected with Siberia by the Pleistocene, ice age land bridge.

    Hmmm

Amazing maps, interesting theory. I need to read at lease one more time. Still thinking about his book. Neither those for nor against his theory can prove Hapgood right or wrong. Science only sees evidence. Verbal history and items made of natural materials don't survive harsh climates. Fires, Genghis Khan and other groups almost wiped out early Western writings. So we will never know for sure. If nothing else, Hapgood makes me think, wonder what the world really was like and what really happened all those many years ago.

  • Oldie But Goodie

An extensively comprehensive study of the Piri Reis Map of 1513, concerning the sciences of Medieval Cartographic methods and modern sciences of Latitude and Trigonometry. Supported by numerous figures and example maps, the Hapgood work expresses a dynamic study of the Piri Reis Map. Later chapters express a view that the Piri Reis Map was too advanced for the period, as well as other maps which were its contemporary, and concludes that those maps must have been the product of a pre-classical civilization capable of measuring advanced distances with greater accuracy than Medieval cartographers.

  • Our unknown past

Did people of Columbus' time really thought he would sail off the edge of the Earth? A lot of people back then probably did, but Columbus didn't, as he was equipped with a copy of the map of Piri Reis or something like it, and knew where where he was headed and even had a probablt ETA. His map depicted South America and the Caribbean before they were officially discovered. Also pictured is Antarctica, which was not officially discovered until 1818. These ancient maps are beyond conventional explanation. Made by many different mapmakers in countries all over the place, they seem to be based on something very ancient and very accurate, the so called "portolano" maps. The Hadji Ahmed map of 1559 combines a completely modern New World with a ludicrously cartoonish ...

  • Good title .

The book is very nice with lots of maps . I'm open minded but I don't agree where Hapgood is going with this . A matter of opinion I guess .

  • Fascinating reading!

A fascinating examination of many ancient maps that indicate that the map creators had a greater understanding of the Earth and the mathematics required to render such accurate maps. Many of the topographical features of these maps indicate their origins are in a very distant past.
