The books that spawned the "Maximum Ride" series.
A big Alex Cross fan, I have enjoyed dozens of JP's mysteries. These two books are more fantasy/speculative fiction than mystery. The tale of engineered, winged children is certainly out of the ordinary. These two books spawned the spin-off "Maximum Ride" series, aimed at a young-adult audience. My wife adores the "Maximum Ride" books (I do not share her enthusiasm for them). I found excellent copies of the nine Maximum Ride books for her on eBay.
