SynopsisThe 85 patterns and 91 fashion plates in this book were reproduced from rare originals of the 1905 American Garment Cutter Instruction and Diagram Book and 1907 1909 issues of the quarterly American Modiste. These publications were used by both professional dressmakers and amateurs. They offered sophisticated fashions, artistic illustrations, fashion columns describing the latest styles, and pattern instructions. They also provided the ability to create patterns for the wearer's individual measurements with the American System of Cutting. Using special rulers that eliminated arithmetic, even untrained designers could enlarge pattern diagrams to the correct size. A full set of printed rulers and detailed instructions are provided for readers who wish to use the American System. Also included are instructions for enlarging the patterns by projection, plus carefully selected sections from a 1907 sewing manual, The Complete Dressmaker.
I love this book. If you are patient, and read how the rulers work, what the symbols mean, and what you have to do, you can make any of the dresses, capes, underclothes in the book. Though it gives you the basic pattern, you have to embellish it yourself to your liking. That said, it gives you the patterns of the stylish sleeves and yokes and shapes of the Edwardian fashions. Embellishing shouldn't be that difficult. It is time consuming, so make sure that you have time and don't get frustrated. If you use the correct rulers, the outfit will fit you. Some give yardages, others do not. Instructions are minimal, but if you sew, it should be ok. Patience though is the key here, read everything until you understand it, then go for it.
