Purchased used. I'd guess the lens dates to the mid 1980's I bought it to use on a digital SLR (K7) in place of an identical "M" lens that I've owned for 20+ years. With the "A" lens there are features that are activated in the various modes like P, Green, TAV, AV that retain the lens settings in the photo's properties listing. Focus is smooth and precise. Close up focus is about 1.5 feet. Good for low light (no Flash) with 1.7 lens opening. I still have a Pentax K1000 film camera that I can use the lens on, as well.

Simply put, this is one of my very best prime lenses. I have three prime limiteds (15mm, 40mm, 70mm), two DA primes (35mm, 50mm), the FA 50mm, and many, many X, A, M, and Takumar primes. I also have a Chinon and a Sears (Rikenon) as well as assorted zooms of all kinds, including the limited 20-40mm. Lenses vary a great deal in my experience: no copy is the exact equal of any other. Therefore, a user's experience with one particular lens may not be replicable for another user using another copy of the same lens. One must also consider the camera body: in my case most observations were made with a Pentax k-30 (in my experience the very best Pentax camera to date, but that is another story) --when using my k-x or my k-3 lens performance varies. Take this into consideration when I say that my SMC-A 50mm. F/1.7 is an absolutely superb lens: incredibly sharp, with wonderful bokeh, marvelous color rendition, great 3D depth, buttery smooth focusing, and perfect throw. Many pictures I have taken with this lens also display a "magical" quality that is very hard to describe precisely using words: this is subjective assertion, impossible to verify but very real for me.Read full review
This is a great prime lens for a Pentax K1000. It provides nice sharp focus and captures a good deal of light at f1.7.

Whether your a Pentax user or not (Manual Settings only either way) it's a quality lens. With a very smooth ring. Beautiful for video and creamy bokeh for photography. It has some weight to it due to the industrial build, but it's a very pocketable piece of kit.

This is a great lens for creative photography. I read lots of reviews and articles about using 50mm lens for composing those special shots with shallow depth of field, or for low light shots - that special sunset, and so on. This is a very high quality lens and I look forward to using it more and more.
Very well constructed, all metal made, focus ring is butter smooth. Definetly a must have for videomakers, equivalent IMHO as the Takumar series.

It may be old school but it is certainly value for money at twice the price I purchased this one as a backup I don't think I will ever need. This is without a doubt one of the sharpest lenses I own and built like a tank it shall serve me well for a long time.
