About this product

Product Information

The past decade has seen sweeping changes in the diagnosis and treatment of sexual disorders. Bringing the field of sex therapy up to date, the third edition of this classic work reports on a wealth of new developments in theory, research, and clinical practice. Existing chapters have been extensively revised, many with new authorship, and additional chapters added to address emerging areas of interest. Throughout, clear guidelines for assessment and treatment are brought to life by illustrative clinical material. Highlights of this edition include increased coverage of sexual desire disorders; a greatly expanded section on female sexual disorders, including a new chapter on sexual arousal difficulties in women; and a completely updated section on male sexual disorders, featuring a full discussion of Viagra and other vasoactive drugs. Other new chapters cover paraphilias and gender identity disorders. Featuring contributions from leading authorities, this volume maintains a careful balance between psychological and medical concerns. It will continue to serve as the definitive reference and text for both new and experienced clinicians, as well as students in the full range of mental health fields.

"...one of the goals of this third edition ofPrinciples and Practice of Sex Therapyis to ¿update the reader regarding new treatment approaches to old problems' (p.5). To this end, the editors deliver. The book consists of 17 chapters written by an impressive lineup of experts who manage to summarize concisely current thoughts on the causes and treatment of a wide range of sexual difficulties. Given the numerous changes that have influenced sexuality research in the past decade, this book serves as an important and timely contribution to the field....Overall, this book reflects the current status of sex therapy and provides a comprehensive and intelligent overview of the field. It is recommended for sex researchers and therapists, students, and anyone interested in having an in-depth look at sexual dysfunction and treatment."--Contemporary Psychology "...offers readers an opportunity to experience a cross-section of contemporary case studies and analysis authored by prominent therapists in the field....This book should be a priority to the reading list of clinicians that work with individuals and couples as it gives a comprehensive overview of desire and other disorders and serves as an excellent resource to the therapist who has had training and specializes in the treatment of sexual problems. In addition, this book can provide an overview of sexual problems for therapists to increase their awareness of these issues. It appears to be well-written and in a consistent format. In addition, while some of the authors are carried over from the 2nd edition, many are also new, making the 3rd edition a worthwhile addition to the clinicians library."--Journal of Couple and Relationship Therapy "Different and at times conflicting approaches and techniques are represented, providing readers with various options and tools to incorporate into their own clinical work." --The Electronic Journal of Human Sexuality "I wish that I had come across this book five years ago when, as a clinical psychologist, I entered the unique world of gynaecology and sex therapy....This edited volume is the kind of text that any clinician new to this specialist area would be reassured to have within easy reach...an authoritative and practical text, yet one which impresses with its respectful handling of an extremely complex and sensitive topic."--New Zealand College of Clinical Psychologists PRAISE FOR THE PREVIOUS EDITION "No practitioner of sex therapy can afford to be without this book.''--Contemporary Psychology "This book is a valuable addition to the library of experienced sex therapists as well as psychotherapists who see only a few patients with sexual dysfunction.''--Journal of Sex Education and Therapy "We recommed this informative and practical text for therapists at all levels of experience, and to physicians and medical students interested in the essentials of human sexuality. Librarians take note, [this book] should be a part of your collection.''--Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy "Leiblum and Rosen's book is a timely and provides accurate information in a form that is useful to therapist and student alike. The book is destined to be a classic in the field.''--The American Journal of Family Therapy "If you do, or plan to do, sex therapy, this book is a 'must.'''--SIECCAN Newsletter, "Continuing in their fine tradition, Leiblum and Rosen give those of us who are learning, providing, or reflecting on the treatment of sexual problems an opportunity to be with the best thinkers in the field. Hope for medication assistance now abounds, yet the authors succeed in conveying the rich psychological and social landscape of human sexual interaction. No one who reads this book will ever again be tempted to reduce sex therapy to a single paradigm." --Stephen B. Levine, MD, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, OH "With the growing availability of new medications and treatment options, the new edition of this classic text is extremely timely. Comprehensive and up-to-date, the book highlights the importance of collaboration between medical professionals and sex therapists. A needed focus is placed upon relationship and other variables involved in sexual dynamics and sexual dysfunctions. I am thrilled to see information specific to women, as well as new medical options for men. A 'must read' for all professionals treating individuals and couples with sexual dissatisfactions." --Beverly Whipple, PhD, RN, FAAN, Rutgers--The State University of New Jersey; President, American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists, "...one of the goals of this third edition ofPrinciples and Practice of Sex Therapyis to ¿update the reader regarding new treatment approaches to old problems' (p.5). The third edition of Principles and Practice is a magnificent contribution to the field of sex therapy. It's all here--from dysfunctions and paraphilias, to issues facing our aging population and those with chronic illnesses, to the treatment of sexual minorities. Not a single major problem or population has been left out, all dealt with by some of the leading practitioners and researchers in the field. Everyone who works with sexual problems, from complete novices to experienced clinicians, can benefit from this book. It will be useful in the classroom, laboratory, and therapy office." --Bernie Zilbergeld, PhD, author of The New Male Sexuality "With the growing availability of new medications and treatment options, the new edition of this classic text is extremely timely. Will buy from this seller again. Fantastic price and I do belive the book was shipped exactly as described. That being said it was shipped in a thin envelope that was about as thick as construction paper and the inside was covered with glue. Book still arrived in decent shape but I think adding some bubble wrap in the future would be a good idea. I'm still giving a 5 star review because it was shipped quickly and I belive when it was given to the post office it was in the described condition.
