This steamy thriller to end all steamy thrillers stars Michael Douglas as Nick, a boozy San Francisco police detective who finds himself drawn to the prime suspect in a murder case--manipulative, sexually uninhibited novelist Catherine Trammell (Sharon Stone). Catherine's latest book features a murder uncannily similar to the one Nick is investigating, and as the pair engage in a mating dance of dangerous one-upmanship, more murders occur, all described in her current work, about a boozy cop in love with a killer. Nick's psychiatrist (Jeanne Tripplehorn), and cop partner (George Dzundza) are both worried about him, and Catherine's jealous lesbian lover (Leilani Sarelle) may be trying to kill him, but Nick is just too turned on to care.Director Paul Verhoeven shows an admirable lack of restraint in this ludicrously enjoyable thriller, a sort of postmodern noir with Joe Eszterhas's script coming off like Mamet by way of Penthouse. Stone and Douglas exhibit fine chemistry (and most of their bodies), and there's some lovely Bay Area scenery courtesy of cinematographer Jan de Bont (who went on to direct films such as SPEED and TWISTER). Wayne Knight (Newman from SEINFELD) and Mitch Pileggi (Skinner from THE X-FILES) are precinct heads who question Catherine in the infamous leg-crossing scene.

1992 Uncut Version's Better than the Theatrical Release
This VHS is the uncut version that was shown as the "Opening Night Selection" at Cannes Film Festival, in 1992. In 1993, this film's lead actor, Sharon Stone, won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama. Jerry Goldsmith won for Best Original Score. The nudity of genitalia & sexual scenes in this version are not the only controversy surrounding "Basic Instinct." The depiction of a bisexual woman (Roxie) as an obsessed fanatic has never been popular with the GLBT community. Regardless of the daring brazenness in both this uncut version & the sanitized one, "Basic Instinct" is a modern era classic murder mystery, suspense & thriller. Nick aka 'Shooter' (Michael Douglas) is an alcoholic detective in San Francisco. Catherine ... As the film opens, Trammell becomes the homicide department's suspected serial killer. Nick is put on the case as the lead investigator. Almost immediately, it becomes quite evident that Trammell is capable of manipulating Nick, who she calls 'Shooter'. She's investigated his life for her next book & now that she's being investigated by Nick, she has the golden opportunity to get into his mind & under his skin. Since Nick's shot & killed on duty before, he's still under police psychiatric care. Trammell astutely picks up on the killing aspect of Nick's recent past. What I found somewhat disturbing about this film is the lousy portrayal of Trammell's friend, Roxie (Leilani Sharelle); plus, the fact that their relationship has beens called "Lesbian." It is not Lesbian; at most, the 2 women's relationship is kinky. Roxie likes to watch Trammell having sex with men! This has always been rated as an adult-only film. So let's be adult about it. In reality there are voyeurs of all sorts. Trammell's composing her latest novel about a murder quite similar to the one Nick's investigating. More murders, as depicted in her various novels, keep occurring. As they do, Trammell becomes more suspect & Nick becomes more infatuated with her. Nick's ex-lover is the police psychiatrist (Jeanne Tripplehorn) who's treating him. She doesn't do Nick any favors by profiling Trammell as a serial killer. But, she's got a motive: she's still in love with Nick & pretends to be doing everything she can to help him. In the meantime, Dorothy Malone appears as Catherine's mentor on mass murderers,. Seems she offed her entire family, so qualifies as an expert! Malone is still gorgeous. Nick's detective partner (George Dzundza) is truly concerned about his & Trammell's rapidly developing mutual attraction. Stone & Douglas are as perfectly matched as actors can be for playing extremely tense parts, both of which have dual roles. On screen these actors demonstrate an impeccably sensuous chemistry. During this uncut version these aspects as much more sexual than sensuous. There is a rough sex scene (played by Tripplehorn & Douglas) & nudity (by both Stone & Douglas) in the film. So this triller is rated R for good reason. It is not, however, RRRR as is Cronenberg's (1996) "Crash." Contrasting the 2 films, "Basic Instinct" is a much less sexually charged rated R film. This "Unrated Original Director's Cut" VHS contains interviews with director Paul Verhoeven, Sharon Stone & Michael Douglas. The Original Theatrical Trailer is a special feature. The most graphic footage cut from the theatrical R-rated version is included in this 1~
