As a classical pianist myself, this movie is incredibly inspiring and realistic in many ways. A son's drive to pursue his musical dreams and his journey through life is beautifully depicted. Geoffrey Rush's acting is remarkable and his portrayal of the artist, especially when studying at the Royal Academy was well represented. Though Mr.Helfgott's father is extremely intense, I can't help but say that his son would not have become a great artist without the guidance of a father that keeps him focussed and instilled much musical knowledge upon him. If anything, this movie makes me want to play the Rachmaninoff 3rd Piano Concerto like nothing else! The soundtrack is filled with numerous wonderful classical music works that aide the film brilliantly. The only reason my review has 4 stars instead of the 5 the film deserves is this DVD edition. While it has many special features I really enjoy, the DVD comes two-sided with the film on one side and the special features on the other. Two-sided DVDs are hard to keep clean and store, but overall, I HIGHLY reccommend this film.Read full review
I had been told a little about this mans story, by a friend that wanted me to listen to a CD of this man playing the piano. The movie is a real tear jerker. I do have to say, I cry very easy. My husband thought it was dark. I thought it was a wonderful, and sad story of this very talented mans life. It did leave me wonder more about him. Like is he still alive, did he ever get more control of his mind? I don't want to spoil it for anyone, so I won't say my other questions. I would highly recommend this movie, if your into autobiography type of movies.
Geoffrey Rush does an excellent performance as David Helfgott. He also has just the right finger length for playing the piano. Sir Jon Gielgud, Armin Mueller-Stahl, and Noah Taylor also do very well in their roles. The sad parts involve how David and his father don't have a very good relationship as he grows more interested in his music than in his father. Note to parents- not suitable for elementary age children because there are some scenes not appropriate for their age group.
The interview w/ director Scott Hicks was wonderful & enlightening, as well as Geoffrey Rush's Golden Globe speech!

I saw this movie when it first came out. I thought I had a copy but couldn't find it when I wanted to see it again. It was difficult to find it streaming anywhere so I decided to look for the DVD. I'm glad I found this. I saw a few DVDs that were cheaper. But in the past when I took that option. They were copied DVDs and wouldn't work in certain DVD players. This sealed original is perfect and at a fantastic price. And the movie is just amazing. The emotions of the main character from being a kid to a full grown adult just left me speechless. If you love music and the idea of just doing what you love and being free. You need to watch this movie.
