Revell USS Lionfish
This kit has only a few things going for it: it's the only kit of a US WW II submarine in this size. There is good fit on the kit and low assembly time. It is not 1/220 scale, rather, it is closer to 1/178. The Lionfish was a Balao class, not a Gato as the directions state. Consequently, the sail is wrong and too big, and the radar and periscope shears are also incorrect. There are other things that shouldn't be there. Railings should have been present around the fairwater, but weren't. Using aftermarket parts it is possible to build an acceptable model-of a Balao class. Nautilus Models makes a number of correction sets for the Revell kit, including accurate sails, decks additional weapons and decks. It is a good starting point for a WW II models, if you are willing to invest the time and ... This kit has only a few things going for it: it's the only kit of a US WW II submarine in this size. Overall a very nice model although a bit simple. The usual oversized representation of the handrails, but for anyone really wanting to it could be improved with some brass wire and some time. accurate rendition of the model on the box cover- what you see is what you get.
