About this product

Product Information

The Nikon Nikkor 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 AF-S lens presents you with an excellent option for either amateur or professional picture taking. The figures f/3.5 to 4.5 refer to the maximum aperture of the Nikkor; the minimum is 22. Close-ups focused at 10 inches are possible with manual adjustments of the Sigma optics. With autofocus capabilities, any focal length can be applied down to 2.8 feet. Aperture can be controlled manually within the lens apparatus with macro mode. This is especially helpful when the Nikkor lens is used on cameras from manufacturers other than Nikon. This manual focus AF-S zoom lens takes a Nikon F AI-S camera mount. Attach the lens to film cameras that take 35mm film or modern digital models. The adapter enables attachment to many other popular brands of cameras. You will be able to put this Nikon lens to versatile uses. In addition to portraits, these Sigma lenses are dependable for landscape photography and macros. The fast focusing of the Sigma lenses produces excellent results for shooting street scenes. The focal length of the Nikon AF-S ranges from 28mm for wide-angle shots to 85mm for a zoom. The Nikkor has 15 Sigma glass elements that are placed in 11 groupings within the mechanism. Glass from Sigma has a strong reputation for longevity and image quality. This configuration will give you precision control of image capture. You can correct issues like distortion or chromatic aberration. This lens helps to provide for sharp and bright color quality, accurate focusing, contrast, and saturation balance in your photos. Distortion is limited at settings of 28mm and 50mm. Pincushion could appear at 70mm and 85mm, but filters in Photoshop will clean up any problems in digital images.A diaphragm of seven blades stops at f/22 through f/28 per the lengths of focal settings. Filters attach onto 62mm threads. At 18 ounces, these Nikon AF-S lenses feel a little heavier than modern equipment, which is an indication of the durability of this product. This lens can withstand storage and travel, plus the sturdy housing used in this item protects the precision glass created by Sigma. Standard accessories for the Nikon are a 62mm front cap, LF-1 rear cap, and a CL-33S hard case for additional protection. The length of the item is 3.5 inches, and its diameter measures 2.6 inches. Its size allows it to contain the precision Sigma glass pieces that deliver sharp photos. The dimensions of the AF-S enable a 3:1 zoom range that balances width with telephoto abilities. The Nikon AF-S has a picture angle of 74 through 85 degrees, depending on the chosen focus length. The product has two infrared compensation indexes. The manufacturer produced two versions of the Nikkor 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5. Lenses built from 1986 to 1990 have the same interior equipment as ones made between 1990 and 1999. The only difference is that the first version has a plastic focus ring. The later version has a wider ring made of rubber.

Fantastic lens for the price point

For the price this is one of the absolute sharpest lenses you will ever find, only exceeded by fixed focal length lenses or $500+ It is a bit older but really doesn't matter unless your camera doesn't have a built in focus motor. It is sharp as a tack at all focal lengths. I have noticed a little softness in corners at 28mm but not bad.

  • Top critical review

    Good for it's inexpensive

Variety of focal length variety for use, zoom is not stable when the camera is up and down, sharpen is normal.

  • Old glass is good glass

Excellent vintage lens. Sharp, plus macro functions are good. Sometimes when I switch from using Macro and manual focus, then zoom out and switch back to auto I have to fuss around a little while to get the auto focus to work again. No problem switching back and forth auto to manual /manual to auto focus with the 80mm-28mm regular zoom focal lengths. Just switching from macro back out isn't so smooth.

  • Stefani Marie Photography - Boise Idaho

I love this lens. As crazy as it sounds I didn't think a 20 year old lens would give me such fantastic shots. I picked this up on ebay for under $80.00 and it was worth it. I use it as my everyday lens. It is a lens that I didn't spend a grand on so I allow my kids to use it when they want to photograph things too. There are some cons but every lens has a con right? Now it could be the age of the lens, maybe even that who know how many people have previously owned this lens so who knows the history... But it is very touchy on focusing. I have had to get to know my lenses sweet spot. Sometimes I have to remove the lens and put back on the camera in order for it to focus. It rarely happens but wouldn't trust this lens at any important photo session where it could happen. But I guess since ...

  • Sharp value old lens

I'm finding out that a lot of the older lenses for Nikon are great value and are built very well, with more metal and not so much plastic like the newer lenses. The glass is great on a lot and not much difference in the photo images compared with the newer $1000 plus lenses. Of course Nikon did make some dogs so see a few reviews first before going on a buying spree. There are plenty of reviews of lenses on line. The 'angry photographer' is a very good one I always fall to for reviews. But unless your looking for the all dancing all singing latest lens and you have deep pockets good luck to you. But for us mortals with slightly shallower pockets do you homework and find those gems out there before they are gone.
